Step In The Right Direction

I’m thinking Mr. Gates may be one of the "good guys" before all is said and done.  MAY be.

Gates to Cut Pentagon’s Intelligence Activities?

Is this story by Shane Harris in the National Journal a sign that DoD Secretary Robert Gates is winning the war with Vice President Dick "Darth" Cheney for the heart and mindlessness of President Bush? Defense Secretary Robert Gates is considering a plan to curtail the Pentagon’s clandestine spying activities, which were expanded by his predecessor, Donald Rumsfeld, after the 9/11 attacks. The undercover work allowed military personnel to collect intelligence about terrorists and to recruit spies in foreign countries independently of the CIA and without [...]

Now, this just HAS to make you chuckle. Or weep.

Mayan Spirit-Cleansing Rite to Follow Bush Visit

Demons, out!  All traces of President Bush’s upcoming visit to the sacred Guatemalan site Iximche will be chased away with a ritual purification by Mayan priests—yet another sign of his decidedly less-than-enthusiastic reception in Latin America.  Mayan NGO leader Juan Tiney explained the necessity for the purification process by noting that Bush’s track record vis–vis undocumented workers and the Iraq war makes his presence at the holy site “an offense for [...]

Something Spectacular

March 9, 2007 · Leave a Comment

The 2008 Presidential Campaign should be something spectacular to watch, at least if the key candidates end up spending all of the $$$$$ they’ve raised.  And will continue to raise. Kos has the early figures. Prepare yourself.  These sound like lottery numbers!

2008 fundraising numbers boggle the mind

As Bowers wrote:  "I am repeatedly struck by just how much larger the 2008 campaign currently appears than the 2004 campaign. The crowds are bigger–including an unbelievable 20,000 people for Obama in Austin. The fundraising is much bigger–Edwards is going to put up numbers roughly equal to Howard Dean in Q3 or Q4, and look as though he is lagging. Already, in just about eight or nine weeks, there has probably been twelve million dollars raised online between [...]

Enough Blame to Go Around…

Unless, of course, your name is Gingrey.  And, you’re a Republican Representative.  From Georgia.  And you don’t mind looking pretty shallow in front of your peers.   The nation.  And, the world.

Rep. Gingrey Blames Soldiers For Walter Reed Squalor: ‘If You Leave Food Around You’ll Get Mice’

Yesterday at the House Armed Services Committee hearing on veterans care, Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA) attempted to stand out from the rest of Congress and argue that the conditions in Building 18 weren’t that bad. Instead of criticizing the cockroach infestation, he said, “I was glad to know that those cockroaches were belly up. [...]

At It, Again…

It continues to amaze me.  The blunt force with which Federal Agencies attack Americans’ rights.  Take a moment and read through AmericaBlog’s very astute analysis of today’s FBI News Conference.  It really is the gang that can’t shoot straight.  Even with rules in place, they feel compelled to circumvent them.

The most important part of FBI Director Mueller’s press conference about the domestic spying scandal

FBI Director Mueller is giving a press conference on just how and why the FBI, again, spied on Americans illegally. Buried in his speech, at the very end of his speech, is this little nugget, which I think is the most egregious and important part of his entire admission…1. We’re talking about the phone companies and the Internet companies providing copies of your phone records, possibly copies of your phone conversations, your email traffic, the Web sites you’ve visited, your online chat conversations, and more to the FBI. Let’s just make that clear right away.  2. What Mueller just said is that the law says that the FBI can go to phone and Internet companies and get [...]

Finger-Pointing

March 9, 2007 · 1 Comment

Ya’ know, an old Boy Scout leader of mine was fond of pointing out that, when you pointed a finger at someone else, you usually had three pointing back at yourself and one pointed to the big guy upstairs.  Newt, Newt, Newt.  Ye obviously didn’t get the message…

Gingrich Admits Affair during Clinton Impeachment

Hypocritical much? According to the AP, former House Speaker and possible Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich (R-GA) admitted to Dr. James Dobson (of Focus on the Family) on his radio program yesterday that he did engage in an extramarital affair at [...]

No polar bears dying.  No global warming.  Alaska is simply the same old, frigid, place it’s always been.  IF you’re going by the government’s playbook…

‘This sure sounds like a Soviet-style directive to me’

The Bush administration is censoring scientists? You don’t say. (thanks to Gridlock for the heads-up) Internal memorandums circulated in the Alaskan division of the Federal Fish and Wildlife Service appear to require government biologists or other employees traveling in countries around the Arctic not to discuss climate change, polar bears or sea ice if they are [...]

Not Good For A Campaign

March 9, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Oooops.  I’m betting Rudy and his campaign really didn’t see this one coming.  If they did, they should have been proactive in handling it.

Firefighters Slam Giuliani: "The Disrespect That He Exhibited…Has Not Been Forgiven Or Forgotten"

Rudy Giuliani never fails to cast firefighters as his heroes, but the nation’s largest firefighters union all but declared war on him yesterday after he backed out of a forum for presidential hopefuls. His withdrawal from the International Association of Fire Fighters forum exposed simmering tensions between the former mayor and city fire unions over his decision in November 2001 to [...]

Those Fired U.S. Prosecutors

March 9, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I’ve been remiss in not bringing this to the forefront this week.  It’s a big story, but even biggere around here because of the testimony of Arkansan, Bud Cummins.  He unloaded during the Congressional Hearings into his firing and the firings of several colleagues…

DoJ Official: "I Am Shocked and Baffled"

One of the more damning pieces of testimony yesterday came from Bud Cummins, who received a call from a Justice Department official on February 20th wtih a clear message: if the fired proscutors continued speaking out, then the department would be forced to hit back and dish dirt on them.  Now [...]

It’s All For The Troops

But, nobody can accuse the Democrats of not supporting them.  Facing a Presidential Veto, they’re still moving ahead with a plan…

The ‘U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans’ Health and Iraq Accountability Act’

In recent weeks, the congressional Dems’ plans for Iraq started to take on a wake-me-when-it’s-over quality. They were going to embrace Murtha’s “readiness strategy,” then they weren’t. They were going to revisit the 2002 AUMF resolution, then they weren’t. They were going to consider additional nonbinding resolutions, then they weren’t. Everyone seemed ready to move to [...]

At Least Unemployment Is Down…

Perhaps that’s because people are busy shooting each other, don’t ya’ know?

Homeland Insecurity

Ah these lovely Bush years, so full of increased violence, both abroad, and at home: Violent crime rose by double-digit percentages in cities across the country over the last two years, reversing the declines of the mid-to-late 1990s, according to a new report by a prominent national law enforcement association. While overall crime has been declining nationwide, police officials have been warning of a rise in murder, robbery and gun assaults since late 2005, particularly in midsize cities and the Midwest. Now, they say, two years of data indicates that [...]
