House Democrat Asks For Answers on Bush ‘Surge’: ‘When Does This End?’

Following up Arlen Parsa’s BRAD BLOG article from yesterday detailing how the size of Bush’s troop surge continues to balloon — in both troop and budget size — above and beyond what American’s were told originally, today Rep. Ike Skelton (D-MO), the House Armed Service Committee chairman, sends a letter to DefSec Gates asking [...]

It’s Raining

It’s a good time to dig deeper into this fascinating (disgustingly fascinating) story from Wisconsin. There’s much to read here.  Take your time.  It ain’t pretty.

United States v. Thompson

Consider a case with the following facts:The state of Wisconsin is evaluating bids for travel agencies. Under the scoring system used by the evaluation committee, the two top candidates are Adelman and Omega. Adelman scores 1026.6 and [...]

Still In Jail

April 10, 2007 · Leave a Comment

So, good reader, take a look at the following story and tell me WHY this guy is still in jail! And, please, don’t tell me "rules are rules" and "laws are laws". They are.  But that’s far to simplistic a view for what’s happening here.  My simple answer to my own question is, "He shouldn’t be".

Now 94 and Harmless, Why Is He Still in Jail?

At 94, John Rodgriguez is California’s oldest "lifer." But he didn’t get a life sentence. He got a sentence of 16 to life. He’s served the 16 plus another ten years for second degree murder of his wife 25 years ago. He’s in a wheelchair, his only prison violations were misuse of the telephone and the last time that happened was in 1992. He participates in AA, a family has offered to take him in if released, and yet he stays in prison, an [...]

Watergate Papers Released

According to the Reliable Source, the original notes from Bob Woodward’s famous meetings with "Deep Throat" (a.k.a. Mark Felt) "have just been released by the University of Texas, which paid Woodward and Carl Bernstein $5 million for the Watergate papers in 2003 — with a provision that confidential sources would be protected until they die or go public. Felt revealed his identity in 2005, and the online exhibition now includes eight pages of typed notes from [...]

One committee is going after Gonzales and the DOJ, while another is leaning on the military. Hard to believe it’s all smoke and no fire, isn’t it?

Congress To Probe Lynch, Tillman Misinformation

A U.S. House committee has scheduled hearings on the military’s misleading statements that followed the friendly fire death of Pat Tillman in Afghanistan and the rescue of Pvt. Jessica Lynch in Iraq, congressional officials said Tuesday. The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform will hold the hearing April 24 as part of [...]

Quite The Turnaround

April 10, 2007 · Leave a Comment

The scene is South Carolina.  The time?  Today.  The people? Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John Edwards.  The discussion?  The polls. What’s happening with the numbers?  Read on, my friends. Read on.  Big changes.   REALLY big changes.

Poll: Obama Holds Big Lead Over Hillary In South Carolina

South Carolina political reporter Lee Bandy writes about a new poll by Insider Advantage with a surprising finding: Barack Obama is leading Hillary Clinton by 14 points, 34% to 20%. "The Illinois senator’s showing represents a complete turnaround for Obama who trailed in [...]

However, one state does not guarantee election. So, consider the broader picture:

War Protests In Iraq

April 10, 2007 · Leave a Comment

The Iraqi people summoned enough energy to mark the 4th Anniversary of the fall of Saddam Hussein with some sizable marches.  Anti-American marches. That brings us to an excellent point in the week to explore a number of contradictions we’re seeing in reports from Iraq.

Iraqis Protest Occupation on 4th Anniversary of Baghdad Fall

Always winning hearts and minds. Michael Ware reports from Baghdad on Muqtada al-Sadr’s rallying cry — and subsequent mass demonstration — to fight against US occupation. Yesterday marked the four year anniversary of the picture perfectly staged toppling of Saddam’s statue. Unfortunately, the man who took a sledgehammer to that statue now [...]

Appetizers, Anyone?

April 10, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Okay, folks.  We’re gonna wander off the usual political path just a bit.  And, it’s not even Friday! We live in the South. Fried foods reign supreme.  Maybe not supreme for your health, but folks in the South can find a way to deep-fry darn near anything.  I’ve warmed up to Fried Green Tomatoes and even Fried Pickles. In moderation, of course.  And there’s nothing quite like Southern Fried Chicken or Fried Catfish. (Hint, if you’re ever in the area, drop us a note. I’ll turn you on to the best spots to eat!)

However, a fellow blogger has found something that tops ‘em all.  And, I don’t think I’ll be trying it anytime soon.

Deep-Fried Balls of Butter

I promise I’m not going to make a habit of posting recipes on YesButNoButYes, but this is a WTF moment. I’ve snarked about deep-fried Twinkies, pickles, Snickers bars, etc etc, but after this, none of that is a bit [...]

He’s just been off-target in his reporting of the Nancy Pelosi visit to the Middle East.  I’ll let him slide, assuming he gets his boots back on and goes after information with his usual vigor.

Building Your Own Signal Fire

Former Ambassador Richard Holbrooke took David Gregory to the woodshed yesterday over his sloppy reporting on Speaker Pelosi’s trip to the Middle East.  Crooks and Liars has the footage, and it is worth watching if you missed it yesterday.  From C&L, quoting Holbrooke during the appearance: I think this whole thing has been [...]

You’re the next guest for "Negotiations At The White House".  But, why bother, when nothing is going to change?

Bush invites Congress to White House for non-negotiations.

AP reports, “President Bush will invite Democrats to the White House to discuss their standoff over a war-funding bill, but he will not budge from his opposition to troop-withdrawal deadlines in Iraq.” When a reporter asked White House spokeswoman Dana Perino why lawmakers should attend the meeting if Bush won’t negotiate, Perino replied, “Maybe they [...]

Just A Single Question

April 10, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I’m really not trying to blow this up into something it ain’t, but I do find the timing of the statement more than a bit suspicious. Especially given where it originated and that organizations close connections to the Bush Administration.

Blackwater Knew About “The Surge” in July 2006

Erik Prince was talking about a “surge” way before our President made the phrase popular. This is from an interview back in July of 2006. The “total force” refers to all resources available to be used in the nation’s defense. Blackwater considers itself a partner to the DoD and all government agencies, and we stand [...]

Ready For Subpoenas?

April 10, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I’m betting that’s how this will end up. I just can’t see the DOJ rolling over and handing out all those papers…

Congress Presses for Justice Docs

One last chance, or the subpoenas come out. Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee along with ranking member Arlen Specter (R-PA) wrote Attorney General Alberto Gonzales yesterday to ask again for certain withheld documents relevant to the U.S. attorney firings [....]

UPDATE:  Well, now, that didn’t take long, did it?

Breaking: Missing Justice Dept. documents subpoenaed.

MSNBC reports that the House Judiciary Committee has subpoenaed the Justice Department for a series of additional documents, revealed last week by The American Spectator, that have not been turned over to Congress. UPDATE: Several senators sent a letter yesterday to Alberto Gonzales requesting these documents: Justice Department officials have previously said they turned over all relevant [...]

BUT, WAIT!   There’s more. On a related subject:

Dems Demand Docs Related to Wisconsin Case

At TPM, we’ve been taking a hard look at the U.S. Attorney in Milwaukee, Steven Biskupic. And so, apparently, have Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee. A number of Democratic committee members signed a letter today to Alberto Gonzales seeking [...]

Imus Update

April 10, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Quick update on the Imus situation. I’m sure you heard by now that he’s been suspended from both the radio and MSNBC broadcasts of his show. All for a pitiful case of foot-in-mouth disease. And, I was just starting to think the old codger was getting a second wind and might actually be good to watch during the 2008 campaign.  Now, I’m not sure he’s going to survive the political firestorm surrounding this incident.

Don Imus has to go

Don Imus’ friends in the media and politics have been rallying around him. Apparently, all the rest of us don’t really know what a good guy he really is. See, if you’re not in the punditry club, you might not get understand. Of course, if you’re in the punditry club, you’re most likely a straight, older white male who has never been the brunt of hate and bigotry. Pam Spaulding has the quintessential post explaining why Imus has to go: "This is why Imus has to go. There will be no [...]

Liking What They’re Seeing

Americans are giving Congress a few more kudos and pushing hard on ending the war.  Check out the latest poll numbers, via AmericaBlog -

Americans want Congresss "to push for an end" to Iraq war

Approval of Congress is up to 40%. Still higher than Bush and way higher than the GOP-led Congress. The punditry seems to think Democrats are making a mistake by challenging Bush on Iraq, but that’s not what the latest AP poll found: "[T]he AP poll indicates the public wants Congress to push for an end to a war that has claimed the lives of [...]
