Lots of breaking news tonight about the Gonzales appearance on the Hill later this week. Before I crash for the night, consider this…
Alberto Gonzales has a couple more days to practice his testimony for the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. He’s going to need the extra time. As John wrote in a post earlier, ABC News reported tonight that Gonzales’ own e-mails contradict the written testimony he provided to the Senate. Now, there’s word that the former Chief of Staff to Gonzales, Kyle Sampson, said under oath this weekend that Gonzales hasn’t been honest about [...]

You honestly have to wonder where the President obtains the information to support some of the things he utters in his speeches. Spending a lot of time in the car this weekend, I listened to a lot of talk radio. On a couple of the shows, members of the military called in and volunteered to talk about "attitude" among those serving in Iraq. Almost universally they said the general feeling is that the Bush Administration needs to either "let them bomb Iraq off the map" or "bring everybody home". Right now, the callers said, many of those stationed in Iraq feel like human pawns in a game over which they have no control and are being sacrificed for political ego.
Bush Baselessly Asserts That Troops Want To Stay In Iraq
President Bush just finished up his speech today ratcheting up the pressure on Congress to do what he wants them to do (give him a war funding bill with no withdrawal timeline), rather than what the Antiwar Majority of Americans wants him to do (give him a funding bill with such a timeline). Here’s one of Bush’s key quotes: "Families gathered here understand that our troops want to finish the job." But is there a single scrap of evidence that this is true? Is there a single scrap of evidence that says that [...]
It seems that speech was filled with extraordinary "stuff". At least according to Think Progress, where they have assembled something of interest…
VIDEO COMPILATION: Bush Fear-Mongering Reaches Fever Pitch In Iraq Speech
In a speech this morning, President Bush again condemned Congress for failing to give him a blank check for the war in Iraq. Increasingly desperate, and facing broad public opposition, Bush tried his best to stir up fear with repeated references to September 11 and dark visions of “death and destruction…here in America” if U.S. troops [...]

Amidst The Dead Students, Reassure The NRA
In the aftermath of the horror from Virginia Tech this morning, leave it to this White House to send the wrong message right away: he’s horrified about the killings but we must all keep our guns. "A White House spokesman said [...]

Yup. That’s the number of attorneys in the Bush Administration who graduated from tiny Regent University. Who’s in charge? Good old Pat Robertson, that’s who. You’ve connected the dots by now, haven’t you? But, wait! There’s more!
Is Regent embarrassed — or is Bush?
About a week ago, Slate’s Dahlia Lithwick noted a tidbit that the rest of us missed: TV preacher Pat Robertson’s Regent University boasts that 150 of its graduates, including former top DoJ aide Monica Goodling, are serving in some capacity in the Bush administration. Lithwick noted that this is “a huge number for a 29-year-old [...]

Allow me to quietly note that Keith Olbermann came from nowhere to make the new TV Guide list of powerful TV News people! And, he didn’t just "make" the list, he’s right up there in the Top 10. Kudos. We’ll keep watching!

Of course, the fine folks over at Olbermannwatch (where my latest comment-inciting column is posted) won’t be happy. Personally, as I’ve said before, I’m a bit bothered by references to Countdown being a "News" program, but compliments are compliments…
And, this ought to get them REALLY riled up! Countdown, ESPN Radio, and now THIS!

It certainly seems that today’s political news out of Iraq could signify a turning point in the conflict. The problem is, it’s turning the wrong way….
Shia Group Quits Iraqi Government
It is bad enough that Bush will continue to put US troops in the dangerous position of propping up a failed regime in Iraq. It is enough to die for one’s country. It is enough to defend one’s country against aggressive war against it. But no one, least of all an illegitimate "President", a self appointed "decider", can expect of Americans that they die to protect him from the consequences of his own lies. Here’s the development that pulls the rug from beneath Bush. The Shi’ite bloc has quit the Iraqi government…[...]

In my journalism background, I was honored with a Peabody Award in 1991. The topic? Arkansas’ Time Bomb: Teen Pregnancy. The discussion of how to prevent teen pregnancies was hot back then. It remains so today. If there is one consistent theme, it’s the idea that truthful education will ultimately be the best resource.
Study Shows Abstinence Only Classes To Be Exercise In Wishful Thinking
New studies examining the effectiveness of sexual abstinence classes show that students who took part in the classes are just as likely to engage in sexual activity at the same age as students who didn’t take the classes, proving that wishful thinking and handfuls of money can’t change everything. The studies looked at four separate [...]

Alberto Gonzales made a run at explaining the U. S. Attorney debacle this weekend. He did some ’splainin’, but…
The American people don’t believe Gonzales
By a wide margin, we don’t believe our Attorney General’s spin. Yes, we can’t believe the top law enforcement official in the United States. That says a lot about Gonzales and his boss, George Bush. The Washington Post-ABC News poll has the numbers: "In the poll, 67 percent said they believed the prosecutors were fired by the Justice Department for political reasons, not on the basis of [...]
In case you wonder why they’re not buying Gonzales’ story…
The Gonzales Wreckage

UPDATE: Oh, there’s one more little item to consider. Even prominent Conservatives are trying to shoot him down…
Top Conservatives Demand Bush Fire Gonzales
In what could prove an embarrassing new setback for embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on the eve of his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, a group of influential conservatives and longtime Bush supporters has written a letter to the White House to call for his resignation. The two-page letter, written on stationery of the American Freedom Agenda, a recently formed body designed to promote conservative legal principles, is blunt. Addressed to both Bush and Gonzales, it goes well beyond [...]

After a busy weekend (another long roadtrip!), it’s back to the routine for a couple of days, then more running around for our son’s wedding this coming weekend! So, posting may be just a bit sparse! Here are a couple of things you might find of interest, beginning with my latest post and comments over at OlbermannWatch.com. Then, here’s one just for fun. Stumbled onto an online site (free, at least for now) that lets you upload music and then listen to it from anywhere you can get online. Pretty cool! Being the old-timer that I am, I posted a collection of oldies (first CD of five). It also let’s you publish a widget to let others listen. So, jump in!
