Rich And Poor

Is this really the way we want things to be?  Is this truly the America that offers opportunity to all who are willing to work at it?

Samuelson: Have the Rich Gotten Too Rich?

Has the gap between the wealthy and everyone else become so great that it’s creating more resentment than incentive?  In a democracy, there is something unsettling about great extremes of wealth and poverty. One question today is whether rich Americans are claiming too much of the economic pie. Look at the latest astonishing estimates from economists Emmanuel Saez of the University of California at Berkeley and Thomas Piketty of the Paris School of Economics. They find that the richest 10 percent of the population received 44 percent of the pretax income in 2005. This was the highest since [...]

Change in Direction

April 18, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I’m betting most of you didn’t realize there has apparently been a fairly impressive change in attitude from the Bush Administration.  It has to do with Congress. And the War in Iraq.  Read on…

Dems to Bush administration: You’re welcome

For the last several months, the White House and its allies have had a consistent message: debating the merit of the war in Iraq is an inherently bad idea. In February, when lawmakers were considering (and passing) a non-binding resolution criticizing the escalation strategy, Tony Snow went so far as to suggest that the debate [...]

Just Getting Worse

April 18, 2007 · Leave a Comment

It’s nothing personal to the men and women who are part of our Armed Services.  I’m quite certain many of them are as concerned as some of us about this "Readiness" situation.  This is no way to raise up an army…

US Military Readiness Update

Thanks to the Spork in the Drawer for pulling up this nugget on current military readiness levels from US News and World Report: " In a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing this morning on Army and Marine Corps preparedness, retired Maj. Gen. Robert Scales testified that two thirds of regular brigades and "virtually all of our reserve brigades are not combat-ready"……The active duty Marines and Army have [...]

Simply put, if this blogger is correct (and I believe he is), ABC News has a problem…And so does Keith Olbermann and MSNBC..

So Simple, Even a Journalist Can Do It

I’ve roundly criticized ABC’s Brian Ross for his blatant falsehoods regarding the "assault weapons" ban provision of the 1994 Crime Bill, but it appears that not only has ABC News refused to retract these false claims, it appears that the lie is spreading among other members of the ignorati. Enter one of the least, shall we say, "mentally agile" disciples of [...]

Why Be Discouraged by the VTech Shootings? It Was Just One Incident…

Apropos of our earlier post today… Not sure why everyone is so upset about the VTech shootings. After all, many parts of America are stable now. But, of course, what we see on television is this one shooting and everybody gets discouraged. We’re not alone in this school of thought, of course… Laura Bush, Feb. 26, 2007: "[M]any parts [...]

Free Speech in Jeopardy

April 18, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I’m with this blogger.  This story has bothered me since I first heard about it.  It’s time to start tracking it, for obvious reasons…

Why this story baffles me

Read this: "Amendment I Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech … or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." Then read this: "DENVER — Lawyers for two men charged with illegally ejecting two people from a speech by President Bush in 2005 are arguing the president’s staff can lawfully remove anyone who expresses points of view different from his. Young and Weise filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Denver, saying they were [...]

Leading the Way

April 18, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Scanning through bloglines over a cup of java this morning, I stumbled onto something amazing in one of the tech blogs….Arkansas appears to be leading the way in an education initiative!  Will wonders never cease!

Arkansas school to trial iPod, WiFi-equipped school bus

If you thought taking a ride on the GamerBUS was a thrill, this one will really make you long to be a youngster in Arkansas again. Reportedly, the Sheridan school district is launching the Aspirnaut Initiative to bring laptops, iPods, and wireless internet right onto Bus 46, and amazingly, they expect kids to actually glean knowledge rather than hit up a round or two of Counter-Strike. The project hopes to make the [...]

The Lies Continue

I assume they’ll be asking Alfredo Gonzales about this little tidbit swirling around the U.S. Attorney purge.  Kudos to the Arkansas Times for chasing down the research….

The ‘prosecutor’

One of the myths propagated in Bush White House talking points about Tim Griffin, the Karl Rove acolyte who was installed as U.S. attorney in Little Rock, is his supposed vast experience as a prosecutor. They particularly like to talk about his 10 years in the JAG Corps (all reserve duty) and his time as an assistant U.S. attorney in Little Rock before he got his unconstitutional permanent interim appointment. We told you earlier about independent investigative reporting that punched a hole in that story. The ConsortiumNews website continues that work with another piece by Richard Fricker. It appears Griffin, he of the supposed great experience, has never take a prosecution to trial. Appointments of [...]

A blogger (new to me) has a great take on the Arkansas part of the purge…

US Attorney “Hadn’t Distinguished Himself” [All Spin Zone]

That’s the reason Kyle Sampson gave for the firing of US Attorney Bud Cummings. I’m sure I’ve seen that phrase used to describe the firings of others of those US Attorneys. Hmm. Seems like a good reason to fire Alberto Gonzales. He’s done far worse than not distinguishing himself. He’s [...]

Razorback Update

April 18, 2007 · Leave a Comment

No, Houston Nutt has not been fired.  In fact, he came out today with a fairly strong-worded letter (likely crafted by an attorney) designed to kill most of the recent rumors.  Does it?  For those of you arriving here via searches on "Razorbacks" or "Houston Nutt", welcome!  Tonight’s update, by the way, is via Arkansasblog.com and Arkansas Times newspaper…

Houston Nutt responds

In an open letter to Hog fans, UA football coach Houston Nutt responds to recent articles about his busy cell phone. He may have had text with that woman, TV newswoman Donna Bragg, but nothing inappropriate occurred. He said he’d like to share his text messages to prove innocence, but the records are "unavailable." He said he had not sought other coaching jobs, despite phone records showing contact with people at schools with vacancies, and that frequency of his contact with Hog fan Teresa Prewitt, doesn’t cause him to change what [...]
