An Acceptable Level of Violence
It used to be that George W. Bush defined success in Iraq as a country that could sustain itself, govern itself and defend itself. Today, Bush lowered the bar: "Either we’ll succeed, or we won’t succeed. And the definition of success as [...]

Washington seems preoccupied lately with finding "Czars" to help run the country. First, it was the search for a "War Czar". I guess that one is still technically underway, although nobody’s taking the bait. The administration did have some success in finding somebody new to become the "Food Czar", though. That’s right. We now have a "Food Czar".
Look, another ‘czar’
Apparently, the FDA is no longer functioning when it comes to food safety, but don’t worry, we now have a new “czar.” The Bush administration appointed a new “food safety czar” yesterday and directed him to develop a plan for addressing shortcomings exposed by recent scares in the human food supply. Dr. David W.K. Acheson, a former [...]

This is a "top of the list" post tonight for several reasons, not the least of which is that the central figure is Bud Cummins, the fired US Attorney from Arkansas. Absolutely striking allegations that seem to make a lot of sense.
DoJ Official to Cummins: Circumventing Senate Was "White House Plan"
Alberto Gonzales and others at the Justice Department have been desperately claiming for months that they’d never intended to circumvent the Senate in the confirmation of U.S. attorneys. But apparently Timothy Griffin, the former aide to Karl Rove who was [...]

I’m wondering how much they pay the speech writer who came up with this Presidential line…
"Either We’ll Succeed, Or We Won’t Succeed"
Remarks by President Bush today to the Associated General Contractors of America: "But slowly but surely, the truth will be known. Either we’ll succeed, or we won’t succeed. And the definition of success as I described is sectarian violence down. Success is not, no violence. There are parts of our own country that have got a certain level of violence to it. But success is a level of violence where [...]

That would be Stephanie Miller and Frank rich. She of the radio show (morphed for a few days with MSNBC); he of the New York Times.
Stephanie Miller & Frank Rich On “Mission Accomplished” & The Press
Day two of "The Stephanie Miller Show" on MSNBC brought us more great progressive talk and guests. Frank Rich of the New York Times joined Stephanie in discussing his article All The President’s Press which deals with the run up to the invasion of Iraq and how the press, including the Times, gave the [...]

The latest from the governmental soap opera "As The DOJ Turns"… It is, as TPMmuckraker says…
Today’s Must Read
And it gets even better. The Justice Department has long argued that it fired the eight U.S. attorneys because of performance concerns — a contention that’s been so thoroughly discredited that it’s a punchline now. But it appears that we’ve [...]

STUDY: Bill O’Reilly Uses Derogatory Names ‘More Than Once Every Seven Seconds’
A new study by Indiana University media researchers finds that Fox News host Bill O’Reilly calls “a person or a group a derogatory name once every 6.8 seconds, on average, or nearly nine times every minute during the editorials that open his program each night.” The study documented six months worth, or 115 episodes, of [...]

They need to remember that rules like this swing both ways. There are Army bloggers critical of the war and bloggers who are very supportive.
New Army Rules Could Kill G.I. Blogs (Maybe E-mail, Too)
The U.S. Army has ordered soldiers to stop posting to blogs or sending personal e-mail messages, without first clearing the content with a superior officer, Wired News has learned. The directive, issued April 19, is the sharpest restriction on troops’ [...]

Well, it would certainly make the event more manageable! Our own ex-governor is on the "don’t show up" list. At least for now.
Most May Be Excluded from GOP Debate
Seven of ten Republican candidates may be exluded from a May 15 presidential debate in South Carolina because they do not meet the agreed upon terms set by Fox News and the South Carolina Republican Party, according to CNSNews.com. Those in danger of not being allowed: [...]

The majority of Americans want deadlines in Iraq. And, now, new polls show most Iraqi folks agree.
Decider vs. Reality
The Decider, after vetoing a bill passing a timetable for withdrawal of US troops from Iraq: “Setting a deadline for withdrawal would demoralize the Iraqi people.” Reality: The nationwide survey of 1,150 Iraqis included an oversample of 150 Sunnis — meant to provide a more accurate reading of the minority group’s beliefs — and [...]

Olbermann-Style. Good segment from last night’s program. By the way, heard an interesting factoid about Olbermann this morning. Monica Novatny was on the Stephanie Miller show, talking about working with Olbermann. She mentioned that he writes almost all of his show himself! That’s impressive. Tackling an hour-long show single-handedly is a huge task! Given that, follow the link and watch.
A Look Back at the “Mission” We’ve “Accomplished”
Keith takes a critical look back at all the "progress" Bush has cited over the past four years. If the "mission" was "bringing democracy to the people of Iraq," haven’t we already [...]

Bush officials say they will keep breaking the law to spy on Americans
No surprise here really….We were told the Bush team would follow the law and obtain warrants when spying on Americans. Wrong. Instead, they’ll keep breaking the law if they want to… "Senior Bush administration officials told Congress on Tuesday that they could not pledge that the administration would continue to seek warrants from a secret court for a domestic wiretapping program, as it agreed to do in January. Rather, they argued that [...]
