Bloggers on the Right are all applauding some CNN analysts who say…

“No safe way for U.S. to leave Iraq, experts warn”

I had to rub my eyes three times to see if this was real given the source, Pulling U.S. forces from Iraq could trigger catastrophe, CNN analysts and other observers warn, affecting not just Iraq but its neighbors in the Middle East, with far-reaching global implications. Sectarian violence could erupt on a [ ...]

Dire Prediction

We’ve posted before about the mysterious vanishing honeybees.  Here’s an update that paints a REALLY gloomy outlook…

Honeybee die-off threatens food supply

By SETH BORENSTEIN, AP Science Writer Wed May 2, BELTSVILLE, Md. – Unless someone or something stops it soon, the mysterious killer that is wiping out many of the nation’s honeybees could have a devastating effect on America’s dinner plate, perhaps even reducing us to a glorified bread-and-water diet. Honeybees don’t just make honey; they pollinate [...]

Another Veterans’ Administration Problem

May 3, 2007 · Leave a Comment

It’s all about money.  And the apparent blindness to the fact that people are watching.  And keeping track of what’s going on.

Jim Nicholson Should Resign

Jim Nicholson is a shameless, shameless person…"Congressional leaders on Thursday demanded that the Veterans Affairs secretary explain hefty bonuses for senior department officials involved in crafting a budget that came up $1 billion short and jeopardized veterans’ health care. Rep. Harry Mitchell, chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs subcommittee on oversight, said he would hold hearings to investigate after The Associated Press reported that budget officials at the Veterans Affairs Department received bonuses ranging up to $33,000. Sen. Daniel Akaka, who heads the [...]

Simply amazing.  And, note, this is from a prominent Conservative blogger.

Bush administration EEOC sues the Salvation Army…

…over its requirement that employees speak English. It’s ridiculous. Newt Gingrich asks: "Why is the government undermining the efforts of charities to encourage people to learn English? And doesn’t it have better things to do with our tax dollars?" Apparently [...]

Comey and the U.S. Attorneys

Just more evidence…

Fmr Gonzales Deputy Says Fired Attys Performed Well

The Justice Department’s former No. 2 official testified Thursday he was unaware of plans to fire underperforming U.S. attorneys and praised all but one of the eight who were purged last year. Jim Comey, who served as deputy attorney general from 2003 to 2005, said he had one 15-minute conversation during his tenure about prosecutors who were considered weak managers. Only one of the eight who were ultimately fired — Kevin Ryan, the former U.S. attorney in San Francisco — fit that description, Comey said [...]

Arkansas’ Bud Cummins traded emails with Comey…

Comey to Fired USA: "I Will Not Sit by"

Writing in an email to former U.S. Attorney for Little Rock Bud Cummins, James Comey explained why he’d felt compelled to defend David Iglesias and other of the fired U.S. attorneys. Comey had given quotes to The Washington Post and [...]

The Other Side Investigates

Probing one of their own…

White House launches investigation against thorn in Bush’s side

This story doesn’t appear to be generating much attention, but it might be one of the day’s most intriguing political items. The inspector general who uncovered cases of waste, fraud and abuse in the U.S.-led reconstruction effort in Iraq is under investigation by a presidential panel, according to the White House. Stuart W. Bowen Jr., the special [...]

Military Bloggers (Updated)

May 3, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Lots of confusion today over what the Army really meant with those new rules on blogs and email.  And the Associated Press didn’t do much to clarify things, as much as it might have tried…

Milblog Bust: AP Gets Snowed

Oh, my. Did the Associated Press ever get spun on the Army’s new rules cracking down on bloggers. Army Maj. Ray M. Ceralde, who worked on the new regulations, said Wednesday the intention of the 2007 rule is not to [...]

The Army is doings its collective best to make the situation worse, issuing, what certainly appears to be,  a contradictory statement today:

Fact-Check

May 3, 2007 · Leave a Comment

John McCain better find himself a new fact-checker!  And, in the bigger picture, shouldn’t somebody running for President have a better grasp of this issue than he seems to have?

McCain says gay troops represent an ‘intolerable risk’

I suspect it’s difficult for supporters of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” to come up with a rationale for their position. They probably realize they can’t come right out and say, “I don’t like gay people,” or “Dobson told me I have to take this position,” so they’re left with varying degrees of incoherence. Take John McCain, [...]

And, over at the White House briefing, Tony Snow was subjected to some "fact-checking", too:

Tony Snow challenged on Bush hypocrisy

over an acceptable level of violence. This was the exchange at today’s White House press briefing: QUESTION: In October of 2004 John Kerry said, We have to get to the place where we were, where terrorists are not the focus of our lives, but they’re a nuisance. The president said he couldn’t disagree more. Cheney [...]

Unless I’m mistaken, this is the second time this week that Snow has been forced to tap dance around an answer.

UPDATE: Oops.  Number three..

Suddenly, Bush cares about al Qaeda again

In his speech yesterday to the Associated General Contractors of America, the president seemed almost desperate to generate support for the war in Iraq. But with no coherent talking points left to defend the U.S. presence in Iraq, Bush played the only card he had left. Over the course of the hour-long event, the president referred [...]

Top 100

Time Magazine’s big list is notable tonight.  For one big reason…

Surprise: Bush not on TIME’s 100 “Most Influential” List

The big news about this year’s issue of TIME 100 wasn’t about who was on the list, but rather about who wasn’t. TIME Magazine has failed to include the sitting president of the United States in its annual list of the 100 most influential people worldwide. Who made the list instead of Bush? Read on for [...]

Overblown Case?

May 3, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I think not.

Killing Mexicans is not Terrorism

That’s the message I got from this article. It describes how a militia in Alabama were planning a machine gun attack on a bunch of Mexicans just north of their town. They are currently being held without bail on charges of conspiring to make a firearm. That’s it? They were caught with 130 homemade [...]

Miller on MSNBC

May 3, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Honestly, Stephanie Miller didn’t do badly on MSNBC this week.  Not bad, at all.  In fact, she tied CNN Headline News in the Tuesday ratings.

Stephanie Miller & Maxine Waters Educate America On Iraq

I can’t believe it’s over."The Stephanie Miller Show" had its final run on MSNBC this morning and she went out with bang. This interview with Maxine Waters (D-CA) should be required viewing for every American. It’s all about framing the issues and few people do it better than Congresswoman Waters. Watching these women shred the [...]

Los Angeles Demonstration

May 3, 2007 · Leave a Comment

We’ve a bit late in noting the story that’s developing out of Los Angeles.  It broke on the first, May Day, when police broke up a demonstration.  It’s the WAY they broke it up that has people so upset…even the LA Chief of Police.

Breathtaking, Terrifying Video Coverage of ‘May Day Melee’ in Los Angeles

Terrific first-hand video reporting from the scene at the May Day Melee here in Los Angeles which we covered as it broke late last night. The following video report features tremendous — and often terrifying — footage from before, during, and after LAPD officers in riot gear began firing rubber bullets into the crowd of immigration [...]
