First, the judge says "no get out of jail card" for Scooter.  Then…

Bush spares Libby

Of course. He commuted his prison sentence. (Not a pardon as headline originally said.) But still an outrage. So what if Bush left the fine in place? Benefactors have been helping with legal fees already. He does the crime, but he does no time. Here’s Bush’s statement. Poor Scooter’s sentence was [...]

We Read Reports

Granted, you don’t expect a CREW report to be unbiased.  With that understood, this is most interesting.

CREW: Bush administration is ‘crossing the line.’

CREW released a report today called Crossing the Line: The Bush Administration’s Efforts to Expand Its Powerful Reach, “which details the Bush administration’s repeated constitutional overreaching and abuse of executive power and prerogative.” Some highlights: – Recently it was revealed that the vice president has unilaterally exempted himself and his office from the executive order [...]

Terror Attacks

July 2, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Not impressive to some.  In fact, they’re being called…

Almost laughable

….There’s been ample discussion about the recent attempted attacks in Britain, the sophistication of the would-be terrorists, and the connection they may or may not have had to al Qaeda. Former Scotland Yard Detective John O’Connor’s comments on CNN [...]

Things aren’t going well in the McCain campaign.  Not well at all…

McCain Meltdown: Axes At Least 50 Campaign Staffers Hours Before Fundraising Announcement

WASHINGTON – John McCain’s campaign, trailing top Republican rivals in money and polls, is undergoing a significant reorganization with staff cuts in every department, officials with knowledge of the shake-up said Monday. Some 50 staffers or more are being let go, and senior aides will be subject to [...]

In The Rear View Mirror

History.  Important history.

Bring it on, four years later

Four years ago today, President Bush invited Iraqi insurgents to attack U.S. forces. He said, recklessly, "There are some who feel like — that the conditions are such that they can attack us there. My answer is, bring’em on. We’ve got the force necessary to deal with the security situation." It’s bad enough that he callously dismissed the [...]

Scanning The Headlines

July 2, 2007 · Leave a Comment

We’ve all heard the reports about how the President pretty much ignored the pre-9/11 report.  So, one can only surmise how day to day events are treated.  We do have a bit of hard evidence about THAT..

Is our president reading?

It’s hardly the most important element of Peter Baker’s piece on Bush’s behind-the-scenes persona, but he does tackle the enduring question: Does Bush read newspapers? To an extent, Bush walls himself off from criticism. He does read newspapers, contrary to public impression, but watches little television news and does not linger in the media echo chamber. Now, [...]

Reporter For The White House

July 2, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I oftentimes wonder how some of these so-called "reporters" can live with themselves…

When all else fails….

The Iraq polls are increasingly grim for Bush, with 66 percent of people now saying get the hell out, with a full 40 percent of that total saying do it now. What’s a highly unpopular administration to do when the nation has lost all confidence in the war? Go back to the tried and true. Get NYT’s reliable Iran war drum beater and reporter Michael Gordon to pen yet another article beating the drum on Iran. Yup, he’s back, this time with some really extraordinary claims about [...]

Leahy To Bush: You And Me At High Noon

Game on: The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee said yesterday that he will attempt to cite the White House for criminal contempt of Congress if it does not turn over documents related to the firing of nine federal prosecutors. "If they don’t cooperate, yes, I’d go that far," Sen. Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.) said on NBC’s [...]

Campaign Puts Strain on Secret Service

"It’s hole-plugging time for the U.S. Secret Service," the Kansas City Star reports. "The arm of Homeland Security faces a major strain as the 2008 presidential campaign heats up. More than 500 Secret Service agents are expected to provide protection for candidates." "Perhaps half of those agents will be [...]

Not.

Europeans see U.S. as biggest world threat.

A new Financial Times poll finds “that 32 percent of respondents in five European countries regard the US as a bigger threat than any other state,” followed up by China, Iran, Iraq, and North Korea: Also, “the youngest US respondents share the Europeans’ view that theirs is the biggest threat, with 35 per cent of American [...]

Say hello to Morning Joe

It looks like the rumors are true: Joe Scarborough is getting the Don Imus spot on MSNBC. Howard Kurtz at The Washington Post is reporting that Scarborough and MSNBC are in final negotiations to make his Morning Joe show the permanent show in the 6am to 9am slot on the network. Scarborough has been filling in (with other hosts, such as David Gregory) since Imus went bye-bye, and has been getting [...]

Good News??

July 2, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Bloggers on the Conservative side of things are all agog over a report that Iraqi deaths were down.  However, U.S. military deaths are up. Is that the tradeoff we want?

Encouraging "Surge" News

You won’t learn about this from the NY Times or CBS news, which is why the Internet is so important. "Iraqi civilian deaths in Baghdad dropped significantly in June, a possible indication that recent American military operations around the country and raids on car-bomb shops in the "belts" ringing the capital are starting to pay off. But June also marked the end of the bloodiest quarter for U.S. troops since the war began in March 2003. Unofficial figures compiled by McClatchy Newspapers’ show [...]

And, as one of the McClatchey newspaper folks in the Baghdad bureau points out…

Excuse me

It Just Gets Uglier and Uglier

Things are just a tad bit backwards and upside down, wouldn’t you say?

Sentence First, Verdict After

From an op-ed in the Miami Herald from James Ross of Human Rights Watch: "It’s not every day that a 26-year veteran in U.S. military intelligence puts his career on the line by publicly criticizing a high-profile operation. But Lt. Col. Stephen Abraham, an Army reservist and lawyer, did just that last week in a Supreme [...]

Inside The White House

July 2, 2007 · Leave a Comment

There are questions being asked.  By the President.  Not the questions you might expect, however…

‘There’s no adult supervision; it’s like he’s oblivious’

We’ve been hearing quite a bit lately about the president reaching out to observers outside his inner circle for big-picture bull sessions. In April, Bush met with some “big money players up from Texas,” who got out exactly one question before president launched into an extended rant about how no one understands him. In May, [...]

Pork For Lunch

July 2, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Riding the tidalwave of spending, guess who’s in the lead?

When the president deems it meritorious, it is not pork

Libby at Newshoggers points out that when it comes to bills laden with extraneous spending, the biggest profligate is George W. Bush: "A House Appropriations Committee report accompanying legislation funding the Department of the Interior shows that Bush requested 93 of the 321 earmarks in the bill. A panel report for the [...]

New week.  The one with a holiday right smack dab in the middle.  At least, here in the U.S. we have a day off.  Your plans? We’ll try to get posts back on track after a busy weekend, but will likely take a break on Wednesday, along with the rest of the country.

US Had Warnings About Glasgow; They Never Reached Scotland

Maybe this could be the big news story about the attempted terrorist attacks in Britain, instead of “ZOMG yards away!” A secret U.S. law enforcement report, prepared for the Department of Homeland Security, warns that al Qaeda is planning a terror “spectacular” this summer, according to a senior official with access to the document. …As ABCNews.com reported, [...]
