Truth be told, Congress has a tough job. Especially with an Administration that picks and chooses what it wants to believe and obey. So, the question becomes…
Can Congress Stop Bush’s War?
The Boston Globe’s Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Charlie Savage, has a must-read article today in which he reminds us of a fundamental truth about the history of Congressional efforts to end wars: while there have been many examples of Congress voting to end authorizations and/or to cut off funding for ill-conceived military adventures, such efforts, [...]

Another example of how we’re killing our environment.
Report: Dead zone in Gulf grows
The "dead zone" in the northern Gulf, at the end of the Mississippi River system, is the second-largest area of oxygen-depleted coastal waters in the world. Low oxygen, or hypoxia, can be caused by pollution from sources including farm fertilizer, soil erosion and [...]

I’m reading a lot tonight that hints at this being a really big deal, perhaps a turning point for the Clinton campaign. What do you think?
Joe Wilson Endorses Hillary!
Joe Wilson just endorsed Hillary during an ongoing conference call with liberal bloggers. Wilson just said that "she is the one candidate in my judgment who understands the need to get America out [...]

Hurricane Katrina Ice Going Down Drain
From the Austin American-Statesman Found for us by the Texas news ninja, Betsy! "GLOUCESTER, Mass. — After nearly two years, thousands of truck miles and $12.5 million in storage costs, a cold relic of the flawed Hurricane Katrina relief effort is going down the drain. The federal government is getting rid of thousands of pounds of ice [...]

Hope these folks are up to the challenge. It’s gonna get downright challenging for some, I’m sure.
Boo Yah!
A line just got drawn on the floor of the Senate by Sen. Harry Reid. (Sure, it was a bit bumbly, but it was a line nonetheless — and a step in the right direction.) The US Senate will operate 24-hours a day from Tuesday forward until bills are either passed or the Republican party antes [...]

To the White House. From a Republican leader in Congress. But, the blogger wants to know, are the words real? Or another empty threat?
Still waiting for the ‘fur to start flying’
Oh great, another Republican senator is warning the White House about the caucus being this close to bolting with Bush on Iraq. …Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, told CNN that he warned Rove last week that “The president is a young man and should think about his legacy.” He should know history will not be kind unless he [...]

Yes, indeed. When Iraq is occupying too much Congressional time, it’s time for the Bush Administration to turn it Iran for a friendly diversion.
"Big Time" Dick is Back in the Saddle Again
Iran has permitted UN nuclear inspectors back into the country to inspect its nuclear facilities, including its heavy water reactor at Arak. Furthermore, the unfounded claim that Iran was behind the kidnapping and brutal slaying of five Americans, a story the Pentagon pushed as hard as it could, has proven to be completely false. And a recent study shows that most of the "foreign fighters" in Iraq come from Saudi Arabia, our purported ally in the War on Terror, with few, if any, coming from Iran. No matter. Vice President [...]

So, she coerced me into taking in the new Harry Potter movie Saturday afternoon. As with the others, I found it "watchable" and it really did not seem to be two hours and 20 minutes long. 2:15, maybe. But, not 2:20. Keep in mind, I’ve not read a single one of the books, so I’m coming into the theatre without any prejudice. And, the fact that the final book comes out Friday night, encouraged a bit of talk about "who dies" on our way home for dinner. Since I have a heck of a time keeping the main players straight, and can’t quite put names with all the faces, I’m not the best at such discussions. Suffice it to say it was a bit more elementary (thanks to my lack of knowledge) than the discussion ongoing here…

Things seem genuinely upside down these days, don’t they?
$120 Billion/Year For Iraq, Squat For Kids Health Care
At a time when Bush has no problem blowing $10 billion a month on his war of choice in Iraq, he is telling Congress that he will veto any reauthorization of the kids health insurance program, SCHIP, that goes beyond an increase of $5 billion over five years. Yet a bipartisan group of senators, including Orrin Hatch and Charles Grassley are in disbelief that the White House makes such threats at a time when [...]

This one has to rank right up there near the top of the list for "parental stupidity". What the heck, let’s just make it number ONE!
Nevada: couple blames the Internet for neglect of babies
Parenting — a responsibility and joy so important to the shaping of this country’s future that some feel it should be restricted to heterosexual couples only. Time and again, we find proof that good parenting has nothing to do with the superiority of an opposite-sex couple procreating or adopting. (AP): The children of Michael and Iana [...]

Just in case things DON’T improve in Iraq, there may be a plan…
Bush may make Petraeus his ‘fall guy.’
President Bush has mentioned Gen. David Petraeus “at least 150 times this year in his speeches, interviews and news conferences.” But some in the military worry that “the general is being set up by the Bush administration as a scapegoat if conditions in Iraq fail to improve. ‘The danger is that Petraeus will now be [...]

Just the way to start your week. Talk of still MORE troops for Iraq.
US military considering sending even MORE troops to Iraq
They really want to lose every seat in Congress and the White House next year. They are insane. "The U.S. military’s top general said Monday that the Joint Chiefs of Staff is weighing a range of possible new directions in Iraq, including, if President Bush deems it necessary, an even bigger troop buildup." Did you catch that cute little line at the end, "if President Bush deems it necessary?" Bush keeps saying [...]
