Silly Question

With an oh-so-obvious answer…

Did WH politicize capture of top al Qaeda leader?

Today, the Bush administration announced that it has arrested the “highest-ranking Iraqi leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq.” The announcement comes just one day after the release of the National Intelligence Estimate. Interestingly, as TPM notes, [...]

The big story of the day. And, it ain’t over yet.

Reid Pulls Defense Authorization Bill Off The Floor, Vows To Return To Iraq Redeployment Legislation

After forcing conservatives to stand all-night and filibuster the Levin-Reed Iraq redeployment bill, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has pulled the entire Defense Authorization bill from consideration on the Senate floor. Following this morning’s vote against ending debate, Reid argued that the Defense Authorization legislation should not be considered until the Senate is prepared [...]

The Overnight Iraq Debate: By The Numbers

The last 24 hours have been a wild ride in the United States Senate with Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) forcing the Republicans to stand before the American people and openly explain why they believe it’s a good idea to keep U.S. troops in Iraq indefinitely. While Republicans managed to again block a Democratic measure to end the war — this time, the Levin-Reed amendment — the outpouring of support for the extended and up-front dialog has been amazing. I have some numbers to help quantify that for you, along with some sad figures that show the true cost of [...]

Countdown=Liberal?

July 18, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Olbermann was off last night, glad-handing it at the big gathering of television critics.  Today, he was making headlines for something he said over breakfast.

Olbermann at the TCA Part 2…

In a total must read, the Seattle Post Intelligencer’s Melanie McFarland blogs about Keith Olberman’s appearance at the TCA. Olbermann doesn’t specifically say it, but, if you read between the lines from some of these responses, he’s practically outing his show Countdown as Liberal oriented – I believe the first time he’s come anywhere near [...]

Another Republican Congressman is leaning, leaning, leaning….

Ferguson Ready to Bail Out on Iraq Support

Congressman Mike Ferguson is having second thoughts on his support of Iraq: Republican Rep. Mike Ferguson has supported President Bush on every vote over the Iraq war, from the invasion to the surge. But he talks today like a man who’s getting ready to switch sides. "I am beyond frustrated," he says. "Either [...]

Such Hateful Little People

July 18, 2007 · Leave a Comment

What’s really so sad about all of this is that it’s not just limited to O’Reilly.  Driving home yesterday, I was listening to Stephanie Miller on Sirius.  She was reading excerpts from email she received after an appearance on another Fox News program last week.  It was almost verbatim what’s included in the following article.  There must be a boilerplate somewhere telling Fox Viewers exactly how to write obscene emails.  Be warned, obscenity-laced emails ahead.

O’Reilly’s Viewers

They’re spamming Kos. Charming emails [....]

One Outspoken Journalist

CNN’s Michael Ware continues to make waves with his outspoken reporting from Iraq.  This guy doesn’t pull any punches and names those he thinks aren’t being honest.  His latest target?  Right to the top…

CNN’s Ware Calls Bush a Liar on Iraq

I sure hope Michael Ware, CNN’s Baghdad correspondent, has his life insurance paid up. With the recent suspicious killing of two reporters, one clearly as the result of an American airstrike, he has to be a pretty brave man to say the following (via Raw Story): CNN’s Wolf Blitzer spoke on Tuesday with Baghdad correspondent Michael Ware, asking him about the newly-released National Intelligence Estimate which "suggested al Qaeda is seeking to leverage al Qaeda in Iraq for attacks against US targets outside of Iraq." "That statement in the NIE [...]

Comes the question for this evening…

While We’re On The Subject Of Hookers, Where’s The Coverage Of Bill Clinton’s Latest Sex Scandal?

As the political media drool over Deborah “DC Madam” Palfrey’s little black book of phone numbers, and the connection between her hooker ring and Louisiana Senator David Vitter, a story from Las Vegas that broke last month implicating Bill Clinton’s involvement with a prostitute ring has gone all but unnoticed. The madam in that ring, a cheerleader coach named Esperanza Brooks, told an undercover police officer that [...]

Larry Flynt says he was “shocked” one Senator in particular was an adulterer

Get a load of this conversation last night between CNN’s Larry King and Larry Flynt of Hustler over whether or not there will be more members of Congress outed as “serious sinners”: FLYNT: We’ve got good leads. We’ve got over 300 initially. And they’re down to about 30 now which is solid. KING: When are you going [...]

The Waiting Game

July 18, 2007 · Leave a Comment

The Senate’s all-nighter ended the way most thought it would – Republicans had enough votes to kill the Democrats plan to start pulling troops out of Iraq.  Booman Tribune blogs the timetable is all wrong.

The Insanity of "Waiting Until September or October"

While it is noble for some republican Senators to come out and finally realize the death, destruction, raging civil war, chaos and near genocide in Iraq is not getting any better and that a “change of course” is warranted, there has really been much of a free pass about the complete insanity of calls to wait until September or October for Bush to come up with a “new plan” or Petraeus to give his not-so-long awaited “progress report” with respect to the escalation. We have been told in clear terms [...]

Energy Task Force

July 18, 2007 · Leave a Comment

There have been reports and rumblings about the way Dick Cheney put together his Energy Task Force back in 2001. Critics charged that he likely weighted it heavily with friends from the energy industry.  Guess what?  After years of fighting, he finally had to cough up the list…

Today’s Must Read

At the dawn of the Bush administration, Vice President Dick Cheney’s 2001 Energy Task Force was the hot social ticket for leading luminaries of future GOP scandals. Once a closely-held secret, the [...]

The Biofuel Debate

July 18, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I had a lengthy telephone discussion with my corn-belt Dad this past weekend.  He’s deeply involved in agri-business, but isn’t convinced that the push for biofuel is all it’s made out to be.  I stumbled on this excellent summary of all of the issues involved in the debate today.  Save it.  It’s great information for when you start talking about this topic.

Biofuels: good, bad, and ugly

We’re hearing more and more about biofuels because they’re an alternative fuel (i.e. “good”), because they don’t increase carbon dioxide in the air (”good”), because they can be produced any time any where (”good”), they can be used in current cars (best of all), and are generally the solution to a zillion looming problems. If it [...]

The Trend Continues

And the White House is having a tough time keeping the story strands straight…

Townsend spins in circles

Yesterday, White House Homeland Security Advisor Fran Townsend held a press briefing, ostensibly to tell reporters about the new National Intelligence Estimate, but more accurately, to put the Bush gang’s spin on the devastating report. There was one exchange that was particularly important (TPM has a clip). CNN’s Ed Henry, to his credit, pointed out that [...]

I usually avoid linking to multiple posts from a single blogger, but Carpetbagger is on a roll, discussing the NIE.  Read on:

Making us less safe

By all indications, the White House released the declassified National Intelligence Estimate report yesterday for political gain. The Bush gang swears the timing was coincidental, but there’s no reason to give the president the benefit of the doubt — the White House could have released the report at any time. Team Bush decided to wait [...]

Not What You Expect

July 18, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I read the following headline and expected to find viewers complaining about the realism of the ABC video.  Instead, from parents of those who died, came notes of outrage about the way the war is being conducted.  It’s hard-hitting material and is worth a moment of your time. As several viewers noted in the comments, "Peter Jennings would be proud".  Watching the story and reading through the comments will leave you drained.  Emotionally drained.

Note:  The video is available in the upper right hand corner of the web page linked from that post.  It starts with an update report from Tuesday night, followed by a commercial and, then, the original Monday night report.  Make sure you stay with the feed and don’t stop after the update.

Notes From The All-Nighter

July 18, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Just a collection of posts from last night’s Senate debate on Iraq.  The all-nighter…

More Notes From The Senate All-Nighter

Our GOP hypocrite of Tuesday night — and this is not an easy choice with this crowd — is Lamar Alexander (R-TN) who said this about Harry Reid keeping the Senate in session all night to debate the Iraq occupation: "It does not show the proper respect for the men and women who are there and their families." Really, Senator Alexander? But I suppose Republicans filibustering Jim Webb’s bill to [...]

Senate pulls an all-nighter

Well, how’d things go in the Senate’s overnight debate? As far as I can tell, the unusual debate was largely successful. Reports about procedural hurdles that would short-circuit the debate proved to be false, and lawmakers got down to business. Democrats rolled out cots and ordered pizzas as they settled in for a marathon Senate debate [...]

Thank You Senator Landrieu

As the Republicans rallied behind President George Bush and his failed war policy during last night’s all-night debate on Iraq, Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) finally broke away from Holy Joe and breaks one off in them, giving one of the most passionate speeches of the night. The Republicans have been calling Tuesday night’s [...]

How The NIE Undercuts Bush

Isn’t it amazing that the White House releases a National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq and Al Qaeda at the outset of two weeks of Democratic efforts to hold Iraq votes before the August recess, when in fact Bush had this assessment back in June? Isn’t it amazing that [...]

This is Just Strange

Put your reading glasses on.  You, too, can enter a "different universe". Think Progress has some salient thoughts on what Brooks writes.

David Brooks Enters Bush’s ‘Universe,’ Walks Away Entranced By President’s ‘Self-Confidence’

Describing it as an encounter that was “like entering a different universe,” New York Times columnist David Brooks recounts a recent conversation he had with President Bush in the White House. In the editorial entitled “Heroes and History,” Brooks writes: I left the 110-minute session thinking that far from being worn down by the past few [...]
