More Than A Little Tacky

Really.  Language like this. In public.  From our President…

We’re kicking what?

The president is in Australia this week and apparently spent most of yesterday trying to rally support for Prime Minister John Howard, an ideological ally of Bush. Not surprisingly, most of the public discussions have focused on developments in Iraq — with Tony Blair having stepped down, Howard is the last major supporter of the [...]

Out With The Old

In with the new.  That’s Iraq today..

Iraq Policy 5.0

I argued yesterday that the White House, without admitting it, was trying to unveil a new Iraq policy just as the old one was failing. Officials aren’t willing to come right out and say so, but they’re actually conceding that the surge policy is an abject failure, and quietly introducing an entirely new approach at [...]

Success Against Terrorists

September 5, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Law enforcement style success. This is a great post, with some saliant follow-up thoughts after a short discussion of the actual arrests.  Read on…

Germans arrest 3 suspected terrorists, disrupt plot

The horrifying news is that three suspected terrorists in Germany were apparently poised to conduct some very deadly acts. The encouraging news is that German officials apprehended the would-be killers and disrupted their plot. The police in Germany have arrested three Islamic militants suspected of planning large-scale terrorist attacks against several sites frequented by Americans, including [...]

Let’s see, if a plane flies from North Dakota to Louisiana, it likely flies right over…..Arkansas!

Breaking: B-52 Carrying 5 Nuclear Warheads Mistakenly Flew Across United States

From Americablog: CNN’s Barbara Starr has been breathlessly reporting the news that a B-52, loaded with nuclear warheads, flew across the country last week — without anyone’s knowledge. It has caused quite a stir in the military. Starr reports that Bush had to be informed about the mistake. Here’s an NBC report: An Air Force [...]

And, a possible reason for all of this:

Staging Nukes for Iran?

Why the hubbub over a B-52 taking off from a B-52 base in Minot, North Dakota and subsequently landing at a B-52 base in Barksdale, Louisiana? That’s like getting excited if you see postal worker in uniform walking out of a post office. And how does someone watching a B-52 land identify the cruise missiles as nukes? It just does not make sense. So I called a old friend and retired B-52 pilot and asked him. What he told me offers one compelling case of [...]

Giuliani: Corruption-Laden Haley Barbour ‘On The Top Of Everybody’s List’ For VP

The AP reports that former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani stood with Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour (R) yesterday, calling Barbour an ideal running mate: Responding to the question about a possible running mate, Giuliani said: “Gov. Barbour will be on the top of everybody’s list.” Selecting Barbour as a running mate would instantly bring the stain [...]

Not Ready. Not Yet.

September 5, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Not for a long time.  So, what happens when the inevitable pullout of U.S. forces begins?  I’m sensing it can’t be a slow, cautious, redeployment or we’ll be caught as the fragile infrastructure that has been created quickly begins to crumble.  Do we end up with a Vietnam-style evacuation?

Study: Iraqi security forces not ready

Iraq’s security forces have made "uneven progress" and will be unable to take over security on their own in the next 12 to 18 months, according to an independent assessment [...]

Attorneys Call Anti-Terrorism Efforts a Total Failure

ABA Journal: "…we asked 50 defense attorneys who’ve worked on federal terrorism cases since 9/11 their opinions of the legal war on terror. (We also asked 50 prosecutors, but U.S. Department of Justice spokesman Dean Boyd told assistant U.S. attorneys across the country not to participate. He declined to tell us his reason.) The Craig Game

Interesting possibilities, now that Craig has said he might NOT resign, after all…

Another Defense for Sen. Larry Craig?

I’ve opined several times that Sen. Larry Craig’s plea might be withdrawn because the mail-in plea agreement he signed failed to advise him of his right to counsel. Attorney Beldar points out that Minnesota has a form for defendants who want to plead guilty pro se. Beldar notes, however, there’s been no reporting that Craig submitted such a form. Maybe a reporter or lawyer in MN could check the file? Meanwhile, World Net Daily comes up with another defense for Sen. Craig: Article 1: Section 6 of the U.S. Constitution provides that no member of Congress can be arrested while traveling to or from official session. Craig [...]

Special Comment

September 5, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Olbermann delivered another sterling performance tonight.  Text follows and we’ll get video ASAP.

Special Comment Tonight

Finally tonight, a Special Comment about Mr. Bush’s trip, and his startling admission of the true motive for this war, which was revealed in his absence. And so he is back from his annual surprise gratuitous photo-op in Iraq, and what a sorry spectacle it was. But it was nothing compared to the spectacle of one unfiltered, unguarded, horrifying quotation in the new biography to which Mr. Bush has consented. As he deceived the troops at Al-Asad Air Base yesterday with [...]

UPDATE: Crooks and Liars comes through with video. And, by the way, you really need to watch it for full impact. The text is good, but the video gives it impact..

Countdown Special Comment: You have no remaining credibility about Iraq, sir.

Keith Olbermann’s Special Comment tonight is without a doubt, one of his hardest hitting and most emotional to date. Keith absolutely lays waste to President Bush’s lies and rhetoric about the surge. He contrasts his callous disregard for the truth and the troops between his six hour photo op in Iraq and the interview [...]

On this evening’s Countdown, Keith Olbermann quotes a breaking Associated Press story that Republican Senator, Larry Craig is reconsidering his resignation from the Senate. Keith talks with The Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza about this puzzling development, and the political repercussions for the Republican Party. Suffice it to say, this would be a dream come [...]

Benchmarking The War

September 5, 2007 · Leave a Comment

It’s all just a big PR campaign right now..

Desperation is the mother of ‘mini-benchmarks’

A week from today, Gen. Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker will tell members of Congress how things are going in Iraq, making this week particularly important, at least as far as public relations goes. Of course, we need not wait for congressional testimony to know that the president’s “surge” policy has failed. It’s effectively beyond refutation. The [...]

And, along the way, twisting the facts just a bit..

Undercutting Bush’s claims of success in Anbar.

Today, President Bush held the Anbar province up as an example of his escalation’s success and justification for why the troop buildup should not be cut short: In Anbar you’re seeing firsthand the dramatic differences that can come when the Iraqis are more secure. … You see Sunnis who once fought side by side with [...]

Dems On A Roll

September 5, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Potentially, at least.

Potential Democratic Senate Targets Reaching Absurd Levels

It is becoming difficult to believe the number of potential Republican held Senate seats Democrats have a reasonable chance of capturing in 2008. Right now, Democrats are in a much better position at this point in the cycle than they even were in 2006, when six seats were taken from Republicans, and the only loss came at the hand of a former Democrat who still voted for Harry Reid to become majority leader. In alphabetical order, in the extended entry I provide a quick run-down of the [...]

Next Up In "Today At War"

September 5, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Much chatter over the long weekend about the possibility we’re fixin’ to get into a little skirmish with Iran. Today, in some corners, the language is a bit toned down.  Still..

Okay, So War with Iran

I’ve written before that there is a very real threat that the Bush administration could go for double or nothing and launch a major military campaign against Iran in the next 18 months. But I had largely discounted this weekend’s rush of rumor and sketchy details about the possibility of an imminent attack. Among other reasons, I have a well-grounded skepticism about stories about US politics I read fully-formed and attributed in the British press before any American publications seems to have caught wind of it. But maybe [...]
