If the quagmire in Iraq was the main reason that the nation tossed Congress to the Democrats in 2006, ethical lapses certainly had a strong secondary role. Lott: Lobby ban ‘didn’t play in big role’ in decision.

In a press conference this afternoon in Mississippi, Sen. Trent Lott said that the looming ethics restrictions “didn’t have a big role” in his decision to retire. He added that he has spoken with former Senate colleagues who tell him “a lot of what you do anyways is involved with consulting rather than direct lobbying.” [...]
