It's clear if you look at the entire quote in context instead of that one sentence then you would undoubtedly determine that it was a figurative recolection. It did happen, Mitt's father told Mitt and his brother about it. There is also as you stated toward the end of this very unfair excerpt that a non fiction book was written, that documented this happened. Also there are independent eye wittness accounts.
