Behind The Bhutto Assassination

December 28, 2007 · Leave a Comment

George just may have some ’splainin’ to do! In fact, he might as well start working on the answer. Somebody’s gonna ask the question…

If Al Qaeda really was behind Bhutto’s assassination, then Bush has some explaining to do

A new intercept purportedly shows Al Qaeda admitting they were behind Bhutto’s killing. If this is true, and let’s face it, I wouldn’t put it past the Pakistani government to start pointing fingers elsewhere, then Bush needs to explain to the American people why he’s been ignoring Al Qaeda since 2003? Invading Iraq had [...]

Gas Prices Jump

December 28, 2007 · Leave a Comment

They shot up 10 cents a gallon in my nieghborhood overnight. Looks like the national trend is the same, and it’s not going to get much better anytime soon. Ugh.

Gas Prices Back At $3 A Gallon

Gas prices rose back to $3 a gallon at the pump Friday, following rising oil futures on concerns about tight inventories and potential supply disruptions. Meanwhile, light, sweet crude for February delivery [...]

Big-Time Apology

December 28, 2007 · 1 Comment

I spent 30+ years in television news. I continue to watch the industry closely. I can’t recall EVER seeing an apology this detailed and, well, apologetic. Usually, it’s a line or two and you get it over as quickly as you can. Obviously, this “ooops” demanded more details. By the way, in the interest of full disclosure, I worked for the station involved for 11 years.

KARK issues apology for mentioning Conley’s name

KARK-TV issued an apology for reporting that former Arkansas track star Mike Conley was involved in the purchase of a car for Razorbacks running back Darren McFadden: Yesterday KARK Channel 4 and the Razorback Nation reported that the University of Arkansas is looking into a compliance issue involving Darren McFadden. The story centers around a new [...]

It’s Getting Bad Out There

December 28, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I’m honestly puzzled over this move by the President. It seems that he’s listening more to the Iraqi government than to his own Congress and the American people.

Bush to veto pay raise for the troops. Merry Christmas!

Suddenly, out of nowhere, Bush announced today that he’s going to veto the Defense Authorization bill. This is legislation that’s already passed Congress, and that the administration had no problem with. Now, suddenly, Bush is against it and is going to veto it, threatening pay raises for the troops and more. Part of what troubled Bush about the legislation is that it would permit US troops to [...]

New Numbers

December 28, 2007 · Leave a Comment

We continue to have a real horserace up in Iowa, but the numbers are showing signs of shifting in the final days before the caucuses.

New Iowa Poll: Clinton and Edwards On The Rise; Obama Dropping

More troubling news for Barack Obama out of Iowa: “The poll, conducted with 500 likely caucus goers from each party on Wednesday and Thursday, showed [...]

Friday Night Huck

December 28, 2007 · Leave a Comment

We simply must pay a bit of attention to our home-grown presidential wanna-be, Mike Huckabee. He’s still at the top of the GOP list in Iowa, despite keeping his foot firmly planted in his mouth. Quite an amazing feat, actually.

Let Huckabee be Huckabee

The theocrats’ theocrat, and current Republican frontrunner, does it again. As MSNBC reports: “Yet when he was pressed on whether he would continue certain practices he began in the Arkansas state house, such as a Christian Heritage Week or hanging the Ten Commandments in his office, Huckabee said, “[I] don’t know why I wouldn’t.” He pointed out that [...]

But, wait! There’s more fun and frivolity!

Huckabee Clueless After Bhutto’s Death, Says Pakistan Has ‘Eastern Borders’ With Afghanistan

Forced to respond to the tragic assassination of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee has spent the last 24 hours constantly fumbling and apologizing for his cluelessness and incompetence on a key foreign policy issue. This morning on MSNBC, Huckabee said that Musharraf was unable to control Pakistan’s “eastern borders” [...]

Here’s a bit of education for y’all. We talk all the time about the Iowa Caucuses and their importance (or lack thereof) in the political process. But, do you really understand what they are? CQ Politics has put together an excellent primer of the quirky caucuses.

Tucker’s Talent

December 28, 2007 · Leave a Comment

MSNBC’s Tucker Carlson did get his journalistic start at a newspaper, I believe. I’ve never been over impressed with his TV work, but he’s cranked out an entertaining piece for The New Republic, looking at the Ron Paul campaign.

Pimp My Ride

because it’s a sad, scary day, a little light reading: Tucker Carlson breaks a hooker’s heart (a Ron Paul story) [...]

A Pocket Veto?

December 28, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Oh, this keeps getting murkier and murkier. To what extent will they go to circumvent the law?

Bush: Congress Doesn’t Exist Unless I Say It Does

As Kagro X details over at Daily Kos, Bush is now claiming a “pocket veto” on the Defense Authorization Bill even though Congress is still in session. In other words, Bush is claiming a right that the Constitution explicitly deems only exists unless Congress is not in session, even though Congress actually is in session. If Congress can’t even determine [...]

Don’t Ask

December 28, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Here’s one to send you to the “comments” button. I’m of the mind that this is a risky move by the Clinton Camp, particularly in Iowa – where the voters expect to get up close and personal attention from the candidates. I can understand the desire to squeeze as many appearances in, as possible, but “no questions”? She even turned her back on a reporter. Now THAT’S not a good idea.

Clinton’s “Don’t Ask” Policy

As she races through Iowa in the days before next week’s caucuses, Hillary Clinton is taking few chances. She tells crowds that it’s their turn to “pick a president,’’ but over the last two days she has not invited them to ask her any questions. Before the brief Christmas break [...]

UPDATE: It didn’t take the Edwards camp long to cook up a response:

Tweaking Hillary

Just when you thought they’d forgotten all about her, Edwards announces his “the ‘Ask John’ program — giving undecided Iowans the opportunity [...]

Grim Way To End The Year

December 28, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Another day. Another batch of dismal economic news. Another hit for the housing industry.

New Home Sales

Not good. “Dec. 28 (Bloomberg) — Sales of new homes in the U.S. fell to a 12-year low in November, portending bigger declines in construction that will hobble economic growth throughout 2008. Purchases dropped 9 percent to [...]

Housing Defaults Take a New Turn

There’s news today of a new turn in the housing defaults mess. The L.A. Times reports, If you “thought the mortgage meltdown was just a sub-prime affair”… “Think again.” There’s another time bomb waiting to explode, experts say: risky loans made to people with good credit. So-called pay-option adjustable-rate mortgages, or option ARMs, were the easiest and [...]

Bhutto’s Death

December 28, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Fresh news tonight on how Former Pakistani Prime Minister Bhutto died. AP reported: “A Pakistani government spokesman says Benazir Bhutto did not die from shrapnel or bullet wounds, but was killed when her head hit her vehicle.”

Strange, isn’t it? But, the big story about the assassination continues to be the responses from the American presidential candidates. Some of these folks are speaking before they think through what they’re saying or how they’re saying it.

In The Wake of Bhutto’s Assassination, Experience Or Change?

There’s a lot been said on the candidate’s reactions in the wake of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination on Thursday. There was the huge gaffe from Mike Huckabee that critics have picked apart and then there was Ron Paul blaming America, which went over like a lead balloon with the wingnuts. But the discussion of the day [...]

Another Long Holiday Weekend

December 28, 2007 · Leave a Comment

At least it will be an extended one for many people. Around these parts, a lot of folks took Wednesday through Friday off after Christmas and many tossed in New Year’s Eve, just for good measure. Given that fact, look for posts to be light for a few days, not that we’re gearing up for a big party. Quite the contrary, for sure. The New Year has been rung in early and quietly around our house for several years now, although we enjoy phone conversations with old friends, reminiscing about the days when we DID go out on the town and ring in the New Year the proper way!

It’s a “downer” Friday. Most of the family is suffering from whatever this cough/sneeze/fever thing that’s been going around. And most of the news is depressing. Including (surprised?) the economy. Here’s your quote of the day:

“We did better when (Bill) Clinton was in than we did with Bush.”

Words from a registered Republican. With new polls pointing towards the economy and health care as the key issues for 2008, the GOP is in trouble. Americans trust the Democrats more than the Republicans on these issues. The question now, is which Democrat do we believe will [...]
