Is there a real concern that somebody might try to assassinate Obama? I guess there’s a concern about that for any candidate. Or could there be something about Obama that worries a certain group? That’s where this all starts sounding a bit “tin-foil hat” to me. Still, there are those extra agents around him now…
Assassination Fears: Reality or Conspiracy Theory?
The conservative site Newsbusters has denounced the concern expressed by Joseph Palermo, a Huffington Post Blogger, about the potential assassination of Barack Obama by Blackwater (or other private security companies) whose balance sheets have benefited immensely from George Bush’s Long War on Terror. Newsbusters claims that Palermo’s fear for Obama is merely ludicrous “tin foil hat” lunacy from the Left. Oddly enough, three days later, The Washington Times, not exactly a bastion of liberals or progressives by anyone’s definition has written a story about the same topic: fear of [...]

The President says things are going just great in Iraq; The folks at the Pentagon aren’t so sure.
Pentagon Official: Surge Has No More Than A ‘50-50′ Chance Of Success
In a news conference today, President Bush said that he now sees political progress in Iraq that is “matching” the security gains achieved last year: It was clear from my discussions [with Prime Minister Maliki] that there’s great hope in Iraq, that the Iraqis are beginning to see political progress that is matching the dramatic [...]

The pro’s and con’s of the candidates and their knowledge of foreign affairs. Obama is in the bullseye this evening, even with a win in New Hampshire.
Obama hasn’t forgotten about his day job
This afternoon, Ohio Sen. George Voinovich (R), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, reportedly “scoffed” when a reporter asked if he thought Barack Obama has the foreign policy chops to be the next president. “He hasn’t any experience in foreign policy,” Voinovich said of Obama, his colleague on the Foreign Relations Committee. “Give me [...]

It all depends. It’s nice to see Clinton step to the forefront with an issue that could help separate her from the other candidates. As you know, I have a hard time buying into the theories that she’s going to skip Nevada and South Carolina. And, I certainly don’t think she’s going to call it quits before Super Tuesday.
So, speeches like this one could have some legs.
Hillary Going After Oil Companies in NH
Under pressure from both Obama and Edwards Sen. Clinton is letting her inner populist loose. Check out this video from the NY Times of her speaking out about the stranglehold that the oil companies have on pricing power. Jerome has blogged before about the huge scandals at Bush’s Dept of the Interior not collecting the royalties the public is owed by the oil companies for petroleum taken from public lands. I’d like to see [...]

The tap-dancing continues, but the long arm of the law seems to be reaching closer to the White House. The question is, does that arm have enough reach to get deep enough to get an answer.
White House told to provide e-mail info
A federal magistrate ordered the White House on Tuesday to reveal whether copies of possibly millions of missing e-mails are stored on computer backup tapes. The order by U.S. Magistrate Judge John Facciola comes amid an effort by the White House to scuttle two [...]

The 2008 campaign ain’t over, people! Pleeeeze! If we let it be over, after a couple of caucuses and a single primary, we’re tossing our entire electoral system into the garbage. What’s the point? Just let the media decide. They know what’s best for you. And for me. Sure, they do.
It won’t be over today
I know in politics people end up living in the moment, caught up in that day’s big news. It felt that way after Iowa, and it will feel that way after New Hampshire tonight. But no matter how strongly you might feel that Obama has wrapped things up, this thing is still a ways from wrapping up. Jerome is firm in his belief that Obama won’t [...]

It’s Huckabee’s turn. And he’s making the flip-flop appear to be a big one. A HUGE one. He’ll come up with some glib way to explain it, but it goes completely counter to the way he acted as governor of Arkansas.
Huckabee’s Radical Immigration Shift
Break out the shovel: Mike Huckabee wants to amend the Constitution to prevent children born in the U.S. to illegal aliens from automatically becoming American citizens, according to his top immigration surrogate ? a radical step no other major presidential [...]
Oooops. Not so fast. And, Huck, do a better job of controlling your “friends”. Especially those who like to think they’re PR people:
Huckabee flip-flops on birthright citizenship.
Yesterday, the Washington Times reported that former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee would “amend the Constitution to prevent children born in the U.S. to illegal aliens from automatically becoming American citizen.” The paper relied on Minutemen founder James Gilchrist for it’s scoop, but Huckabee disputed the claim, saying he had “no intention” of denying the right [...]

Some would say corruption could be in her blood.
CREW Calls for Criminal Investigation of Dem Senator
You might say there’s an art, a finesse to earmarking. And Sen. Mary Landrieu’s (D-LA) $2 million earmark in 2001 to the Voyager literacy program was bad art. The Washington Postlaid it all out in a big piece late last year: four days after getting a heap of campaign contributions from Voyager executives and relatives, Landrieu delivered the earmark, which provided [...]
UPDATE: It took a while, but Landrieu finally responded. And has some evidence on her side.

Heck, no!!
Pentagon Inspector General Refuses To Probe KBR Rape Case
Last month, after ABC News reported that former Halliburton/KBR employee Jamie Leigh Jones had been gang-raped by her co-workers while working in Baghdad, multiple lawmakers — including Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX), Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) — pressed the Bush administration to reveal the state of the case and to explain [...]

I’m puzzled. What possible reason could the Obama campaign have for being all secret about his fund-raising events? Now, I’m not one to jump to extremes, but somebody is going to start thinking there’s something fishy going on. Aren’t they? Or, perhaps, it’s just the Obama Camp’s way of making sure there aren’t 100 cameras poked in the faces of donors. Pretty innocent under that scenario, isn’t it?
Obama Secretive About Fundraisers He Will Be Attending
With two presidential votes behind him, Democratic frontrunner Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.)) starts a new round of fund-raisers in New York, Boston and Chicago as the candidate who is making transparency a centerpiece of his White House bid continues to with-hold details of his higher-end fund-raising operation. Obama will headline fund-raising events in [...]

But, still, vitally important. For the lack of attention it’s receiving here in the U.S. I guess all the big media folks are too busy running around New Hampshire to pay attention. That’s really sad. Disturbing. And wrong. I posted about the story earlier. Here’s why it’s important to you (or SHOULD be important) and why it truly is an important story.
Worldwide Coverage of the Sibel Edmonds Bombshell!
Good news! The bombshell report on the front page of London’s Sunday Times on charges made by former FBI translator Sibel Edmonds, has finally led to press coverage by the mainstream media! From one side of the globe to the other, as expected, the explosive allegations whistleblower allegations concerning highly-placed, well-known [...]

So, let’s assume that Obama wins tonight. Is it over for Hillary? I don’t think so. She has money and, with some campaign changes, could mount a comeback. The blogosphere is alive with suggestions…
A Sliver of Hope for Clinton
Clinton was polling twelve to twenty points behind in South Carolina before she decided to compare Barack Obama to Martin Luther King Jr. as a criticism. I personally think people are making too much of her remarks, which were so transparently self-defeating as to preclude intentional offense. I also think too much is being made of her emotional moment yesterday where she seemed to get a little self-pitying. But when you combine these late events with absolutely horrible press coverage, we’re getting close to Howard Dean’s ‘aaargh’ territory. The significance [... ]
The Hillary Comeback
I’m not saying I buy this entirely, but let me play Devil’s advocate. Even if he wins New Hampshire as he seems certain to, I’m not sure that Obama has much better than even odds for the nomination. The key to this analysis lies in the Democratic calendar. From Wednesday morning until February 5th, [...]

Y’all will be glued to the tube tonight, woncha? Watching election returns roll in. Waiting to see if Obama repeats. Looks like it could happen. It also looks like the Hillary camp is worried. However, I think that could change if she could continue to present an image like she did in an MSNBC interview. It happened late last night with Joe and Mike from “Morning Joe”. It aired this morning and (to my surprise) she came off as warm, friendly, approachable and (gasp!) funny! Not to say she didn’t tackle the tough questions. She did. And she had the answers. If that could just translate into her campaign appearances…well, I think things would be different. Maybe it’s all part of the new plan. Ya’ suppose?
Will Hillary hire Begala and Carville to save her campaign?
Chuck Todd, NBC’s political director and the former head of the Hotline (a big inside-the-beltway publication), just wondered on MSNBC whether Hillary might hire James Carville and Paul Begala in a last effort to salvage her campaign. You’ll recall that Carville and Begala were the two gurus who helped Bill Clinton win in 1992. In Todd’s scenario, [...]
UPDATE: Well, that was kinda fun. While it lasted.
Carville, Begala Deny That They’re Joining Hillary Campaign
Of course, denials today can turn into acceptance tomorrow!

President Bush knows how he expects to be remembered, after he leaves office. Any guesses?
Welcome to the Asylum
Dan Froomkin: “With time running short on his presidency — and on the eve of a trip to the Middle East — President Bush seems to have overcome his aversion to talking about his legacy and is now speaking fervently about how he expects to be remembered. As it turns out, the president sees himself as quite [...]
