Settle Down, Children

January 14, 2008 · No Comments

He’s right. It’s about time the candidates start acting like professionals. And grown-ups. Sure, politics can be an ugly game. But, it doesn’t have to get this bad.

Where Have The Grown Ups Gone?

After seeing since New Hampshire how the Democratic quest for the nomination has devolved into an ugly pie fight, am I the only one who wishes [...]

And, THIS is part of what he’s complaining about:

Obama Nevada Flyer: “You Can Be A Democrat For One Day”

…As I have said before, Obama is a fighter for Obama. He is not a fighter for the Democratic Party or Democratic values. This flyer is emblematic of everything that [...]

How Close Is It?

January 14, 2008 · No Comments

About as close as you can get. But, heck, it sure helps keep things interesting!

Reno-Gazette Journal Poll: Dead Heat in Nevada

The latest Reno Gazette-Journal poll in Nevada shows a very close Democratic presidential race with Sen. Barack Obama leading with [...]

As long as we’re looking at Nevada…

An FAQ on the Nevada at-large caucus disenfranchisement debacle

You may have heard that there is a nasty battle over the alleged disenfranchisement of union voters in the upcoming Nevada Democratic caucuses on January 19th. Allegations have been floating around that Clinton-affiliated operatives are trying to disenfranchise union members likely to caucus for Obama. The National Education Association (NEA, a teachers’ union) has filed a [...]

Monday Huck

January 14, 2008 · No Comments

The longer he stays near the top of the pack, the more attention Mike Huckabee attracts and the more criticism he gets. If you think there’s some racism on the Democrat side of the campaign, take a look at this. Hoooo boy, here’s today’s Must Read:

Is Huckabee Rapture Ready?

Max Blumenthal in The Nation: “Of all the right-wing figures who have promoted Mike Huckabee’s extraordinary political rise from a backwater church to the national pulpit of a presidential campaign–and there are many–perhaps none know the former Arkansas governor and current Republican presidential front-runner better than Jay Cole. A Baptist minister based in Fayetteville, [...]

Slap In The Face

January 14, 2008 · No Comments

You order a report - a big, detailed, report - full of recommendations. Then, of course, you just ignore it. Why bother going through the motions of having all the work done?

Bush Disowns Iran NIE

From Newsweek: “In public, President Bush has been careful to reassure Israel and other allies that he still sees Iran as a threat, while not disavowing his administration’s recent National Intelligence Estimate. That NIE, made public Dec. 3, embarrassed the [...]

Racism And The Economy

Key issues in the campaigns.

Reality: Why Obama Is Exploiting Racism

Obama is trying to divert attention 1) from his stinging loss in New Hampshire, and 2) from his inadequacies as a presidential candidate, mostly his cluelessness about what he’d actually do if he were president — most recently, about what he’d do to stimulate the economy. “He speaks with so much passion, but I’m not sure [...]

UPDATE: Well, now. Looks like things may be cooling off:

Obama Calls a Truce; Cinton Accepts

At Reno press conference, says he wants “tit-for-tat” with Clinton to end. Clinton statement also calls for a truce. Read it here. To watch public-access-quality video excerpt, click above. Not getting the “truce” talking points: Clinton supporter Rep. Charlie Rangel on NY1 calls Obama “absolutely stupid” for going after Clinton on MLK. [...]

The Coming Thing

January 14, 2008 · No Comments

This is kinda cool, but kinda scary. If you’re bothered about all the info your neighborhood supermarket collects when you use that “customer loyalty” card, this is gonna freak you out: It’s a shopping cart that delivers ads to a TV screen on the cart, customized to your shopping list. And, then, the doggone thing checks you out!

Microsoft and MediaCart prepping self-checkout carts, with RFID, video and grocery lists for good measure

We’ve heard plenty of these initiatives before, but with the likes of Microsoft pushing the tech, it might not be too long before we’re all pushing a super-connected shopping cart down the aisle. Microsoft’s aQuantive acquisition last year has [...]

Climate Change

January 14, 2008 · No Comments

The evidence certainly seems overwhelming, at least to my feeble old mind. Global Warming/Climate Change is for real. I’m deferring to AMERICAblog, where a couple of posters have a pair of frightening reports to brighten your evening. Care to argue?

Antarctica is starting to melt because of climate changes

The Washington Post informs us today that ice sheets in Antarctica are starting to melt — but no one expected these ice sheets to be melting. Here’s the money quote: [...]

Study: Northeast winters warming fast

From AP: “A study of weather station data from across the Northeast from 1965 through 2005 found December-March temperatures increased by [...]

Let The Battle Begin

January 14, 2008 · No Comments

Whew. Exhausting weekend. Almost impossible to drag myself out of bed when the alarm clock came on this morning. Forced myself to do so because the puppies were prancing, ready for the first round of squirrel chasing in the back yard. Big chatter on the morning cable news shows seemed to be about the race issue in the Democratic campaign. And, guess what? Same thing in the political blogs:

Third Clintonite Goes After Obama’s Drug Use

There can be no doubt now that the Clinton campaign has decided to make a major campaign issue of Obama’s decades-old personal behavior. Robert Johnson, the founder of BET, said this at a Clinton rally in South Carolina Sunday: I am frankly insulted that the Obama campaign would imply that we are so stupid that we would think Hillary and Bill Clinton, who have been deeply and emotionally involved in black issues [...]
