I’d pay to see this debate format in action! The Brokaw concept is priceless.

Brokaw Talks Booze on Conan

Tom Brokaw talked politics and “Boom” as a guest on Late Night with Conan O’Brien last night, but he seemed to always come back to one topic: alcohol. Brokaw had a an idea to spice up the multitude of presidential [...]

Hump Day Huck

January 16, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I almost let the evening get by without a stellar move by the Huckabee campaign. Almost. Saved by the quote of the day:

New Huckabee Adviser Called For ‘A Cop In Front Of Every Mosque’ Just ‘For Safe Keeping’

Earlier this month, Newsday columnist and Fox News contributor James Pinkerton joined former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee’s presidential campaign as a “senior adviser” who “will work at the intersection of policy and strategic messaging.” Pinkerton, who worked in the White House under presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, says he “felt called” to to [...]

Then, there’s this segment from Wednesday’s “Morning Joe” on MSNBC. ‘Bout spit out my coffee:

Fried Squirrel: I’m Loving It!

Mike Huckabee explains how he’ll appeal to SC voters by explaining how he and his crew ate fried squirrel made in a popcorn popper in college [...]

And, finally: It’s Huckabee’s idea, but one analyst says it’s not a good one.

Retirees and the FairTax

Matt Yglesias reprints a chart showing that Mike Huckabee’s 30% national sales tax would be good for the rich and bad for the middle class, and then adds this: “Of course, the elderly in particular get hammered here [...]

It’s on the way. So are the U.s. Marines. Afghanistan’s not looking good.

Afghanistan

Tensions between U.S. and European forces in Afghanistan have been tense for a while (see the Washington Post story I flagged yesterday for a rundown). The nickel version is that things aren’t going well in the European-run south and American [...]

Uncle Sam wants…to see your email

And you thought the Patriot Act and warrantless wiretapping was a big deal. Hah — look at what Uncle Peeping Sam wants from you now. “National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell is drawing up plans for cyberspace spying that would make the current debate on warrantless wiretaps look like a “walk in the park,” according to an [...]

Sheesh, this guy can put his foot in his mouth. He gets away with it because he never gives a guest a chance to catch up and challenge him.

O’Reilly To Schultz: “If you know where’s a veteran, sleeping under a bridge, you call me immediately, and we will make sure that man does not do it.”

Progressive radio talk show host Ed Schultz went on The O’Reilly Factor (Why, Ed? Why?) to give his views on the Democratic half of the presidential slate. Never one to pass up the chance to bring up past stupidity, when the talk went to John Edwards, Billo [...]

Pointing the Finger of Blame

January 16, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Another amazing tale crafted by the White House. First, the Iran encounter, now this:

Rogue CIA Agent to Blame For Destroyed Tapes?

No one in the White House told anyone to destroy the torture tapes. It was all the doing of two rogue CIA officials. The Bush administration gets a pass. No one there advised the CIA to eliminate the most damning evidence that water boarding was used at secret CIA prisons. At least that’s the story the Washington Post is putting out this morning and you;re free to believe it if you wish: In late 2005, the retiring CIA station chief in Bangkok sent a classified cable to his superiors in [... ]

And, in case that’s not enough to make your eyes roll back in your head, here’s another bit of WH ugliness. I’m agast – aren’t businesses required to keep all e-mails for YEARS, if not forever? But the White House…nooooo.

White House reused e-mail tapes(backup computer tapes, including those in the CIA leak case)

The White House has acknowledged recycling its backup computer tapes of e-mail before October 2003, raising the possibility that many electronic messages – including those pertaining to the CIA leak case – have been taped over and are gone forever. The disclosure [...]

Bachmann: I’m ‘Proud’ That ‘We Have People Working Two Jobs’ And ‘Longer Hours’

Topping Congress’s agenda as it returns this week is a plan to “jump-start the economy and try to shorten the slowdown that many economists say has already begun to take hold.” Today, Rep. Eric Cantor (VA), the chief deputy Republican whip in the House, unveiled his proposal to stimulate the economy. His legislation — [...]

Here Comes The Real Fun

How ’bout it? Not one, but TWO brokered conventions! Good, old-time, politics!

Two Brokered Conventions?

You can keep track of the delegate counts here. Keep in mind that the superdelegates on the Democratic side are not pledged to any particular candidate and are, in effect, free agents that can change their mind at any time. One thing you’ll notice is that despite all the hoopla over Obama’s win in Iowa and Clinton’s win in New Hampshire, the contests didn’t mean anything in the delegate count. In Iowa the delegates were allocated: Obama (16), Clinton (15), and Edwards (14), even though Edwards technically came in second [... ]

Election Roundup: Vegas and Michigan

Oh. I guess I am supposed to write something. Okay. The Democratic debate tonight didn’t change anything and probably didn’t move the race a single point in any particular direction. If you liked one of the candidates going in, you probably still like them. Same if you didn’t like them. If you’d never seen them debate before, you were probably most impressed with Clinton and Edwards, as Obama opted less for soaring rhetoric than sober analysis. But they were all impressive, all had their moments, and no one made any [... ]

Well kids, this looks rather interesting: “WASHINGTON (AP) — A former congressman and delegate to the United Nations was indicted Wednesday as part of a terrorist fundraising ring that allegedly sent more than $130,000 to an al-Qaida and Taliban supporter who has threatened U.S. and international troops in Afghanistan.
