In Case You’re Keeping Track

And, that would mean that you care. Clinton and McCain are out in front, but there’s this little matter of a pretty health margin of error to consider.

What A Treat!!

January 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

For late Friday night. A new article on one of my favorite subjects, UFO’s! Video, too! And, it ain’t from some loony fringe website. Newsweek offers up something you should read…

‘Demons in the Dark’

On an otherwise unremarkable January night in Stephenville, Texas, dozens of people looked to the sky and saw a vast vessel with a combination of red, white and yellow lights flying fast over the area’s farms. One observer said the vessel was a mile long. Several said they saw fighter jets chasing it. One said he feared the object’s appearance might mean “the end of times.” A pilot, a cop and some businessmen, housewives, and children all say they saw a UFO on Jan. 8. The spaceship moved over the [...]

UPDATE: It’s not a full moon, is it? There more reports to explore, and not just from here in the U.S.

UK: UFO mystery deepens as sightings increase

Further reports of UFO activity in the skies above the region have been flooding in. Harry Hughes’ sighting of five orange orbs in the sky above his house in Mynydd Isa on Christmas Day has prompted numerous reports from other residents of similar sightings across Flintshire, Wrexham and Chester. David Clark, of Elwy Close, Bryn y Baal, agreed with Mr Hughes’ description of the strange objects. He said: [...]

FLASHBACK: San Diego: New Year’s Eve UFO (video)

It was New Year’s Eve, after all, and people may be in altered states where they see lots of strange things. But three groups of San Diegans swear they were sober enough to report seeing strange orange-yellow lights in the sky about 30 minutes after midnight. And the National UFO Reporting Center said [...]

UPDATE 2: Now, UFO stories are popping up everywhere. How about a little “Area 51″ update? New name!

Area 51’s New Name: ‘Homey Airport’

Area 51 has a name and it’s called Homey, as in Homey Airport. The newsletter of the Aircraft Owners and Pilot Association has noted that the mysterious Area 51 “has been appearing in flight-planning software and on handheld GPS receivers [...]

O’Reilly and the Homeless Vets

Well, he’s halfway there. Maybe. Still, he remains among the ignorant ones.

O’Reilly Admits There Are 200K Homeless Vets, Still Says Edwards ‘Is A Liar’ Who Owes ‘An Apology’

Recently, Fox News host Bill O’Reilly attacked former senator John Edwards for noting the 200,000 homeless veterans who “go to sleep under bridges and on grates” every night. “The only thing sleeping under a bridge is that guy’s brain,” quipped O’Reilly. O’Reilly continued his attack earlier this week, claiming “They may be out there, but [...]

Another “Gotcha” Moment

For Mike Huckabee.

Mike Huckabee: The Constitution Is A “Living, Breathing Document”

Unless, of course, it’s not. This is a classic and seems difficult to just “explain away”.

Better check to see if they got yours! You do, after all, use that JC Penney card a lot!

Data lost on 650,000 credit card holders

Personal information on about 650,000 customers of J.C. Penney and up to 100 other retailers could be compromised after a computer tape went missing. GE Money, which handles credit card operations for Penney and many other retailers, said Thursday night that the missing information includes Social Security numbers for [...]

Ignorant Man

January 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

How can anyone who gets so much radio and TV airtime be so doggone stupid!!! Even the President says the economy will be “okay” if he gets his economic incentive package. Not “great”. Certainly not “phenomenal”. And, yes, that is the word Shawn Hannity used last night!

Hannity: ‘The economy is phenomenal.’

Yesterday on Fox’s Hannity and Colmes, the duo battled over the status of the ailing economy. “We should have tax cuts “for the middle class, not for the wealthy,” Colmes said. “How about everybody,” interrupted Hannity. Hannity then proclaimed that he thinks the economy is doing “phenomenal” right now: COLMES: That doesn’t seem to be helping [...]

Here’s your “Must Read” for this Friday night.

When the Secret Service breaks the law to protect The Bubble

Over the course of two terms, the Bush White House’s efforts to maintain an impenetrable ideological “Bubble” have become the stuff of legend. It’s always amazed me the extent to which the Bush gang will shield itself from anyone, or anything, that even resembles dissent. We’re dealing with a group that believes it has a [...]

Rudy

Better get a post about Giuliani up quickly. Doesn’t look likely that he’ll hang in there much longer. There a new poll summary in the post below and it’s lookin’ pretty ugly.

50 Ways To Be A Loser

I know I’ve been hitting on the Rudy collapse story for a while. But it’s just so vast there are a lot of points to cover. Remember that the Rudy ‘plan’ (which on many levels is a phony anyway) was [...]

Take A Break

January 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I’m a photographer by hobby, and a transplanted Northerner. So, when I stumbled on this link to some spectacular photography showcasing one of the tragedies of the North, I was fascinated. It’s not an uplifting set of photos, but remarkably intriguing. Partially so, I would guess, because I can see similar images not far from where I grew up in Iowa. They also reminded me of just how cold it is up there, this time of year. It’s a world of black and white, snow on the ground, leaf-less trees silhouetted against a cloudy sky. Spend a few minutes with these photos. They speak volumes about the rural north and those who still live there.

The Good, The Bad

January 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

And, the ugly. Here’s Iraq today. We’ll start with the headlines in USA Today -

Military rates 75% of Baghdad neighborhoods secure

About 75% of Baghdad’s neighborhoods are now secure, a dramatic increase from 8% a year ago when President Bush ordered more troops to the capital, U.S. military figures show. The military classifies 356 of Baghdad’s 474 neighborhoods in the “control” or “retain” category of its four-tier security rating system, meaning [...]

On the other hand…

‘Iraq’s government is at a stalemate.’

Writing in the Washington Post this morning, Iraq’s national security adviser Mowaffak al-Rubaie says that “Iraq’s government is at a stalemate.” Al-Rubaie writes that “it has been impossible to maintain a political consensus on many important issues,” partially because “the U.S.-dominated coalition, which [...]

The Devil Is In The Details

January 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Presidential hopeful, Mike Huckabee, is keeping up the snappy banter, but a growing number of folks are looking intensely at his record. They’re finding that it doesn’t always dovetail with his campaign rhetoric.

The Arkansas Times newspaper has always been on Huckabee’s case. Now, on their blog, they’ve started a daily (or almost daily) feature that aggregates reports from those who have been digging for the truth, opinion pieces, and just interesting mentions of the former Arkansas governor.

The morning Huck

Looks like Olbermann’s on the trail of Huckabee, too:

Huckabee on homosexuality: Today’s Worst Person in the World

Then, there’s this from the “Shakespeare’s Sister” blog:

Changing the Definition

For a man who is considered to be one the front-runners in the GOP field, Mike Huckabee is showing a startling clarity of vision. While the other candidates have learned the fine art of nuance and the ability to say something without saying something that could be misinterpreted (or dismissed as being out of context), Mr. Huckabee does not hold back. In a way, [...]

Late addition to the lineup, but it’s a doozy!

Crazy Like Mike

Mike Huckabee rose to prominence seemingly out of nowhere, skyrocketing up the polls, capturing Iowa, and emerging as the presumptive frontrunner, all the while becoming a media darling — remember that Frank Rich called him the Obama of the GOP — but, as his star fades, as the phenomenon withers, as his candidacy collapses, the man is getting more and more extreme, more and more disgusting. Or, perhaps, [...]

Ugly Allegations

Of course, the two plants in question are in the South. Nice, huh?

Tyson Foods To Investigate Allegations Of Chicken Torture

Tyson Foods Inc., the largest U.S. meat company, said it will investigate allegations by the animal-welfare group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) that chickens were abused and tortured at two of its chicken processing plants. PETA said an undercover investigator for the group had video documentation of workers throwing [...]

Looking Mighty Suspicious

January 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Maybe I’m just the suspicious type, but I know that somebody would be in big trouble if this happened in private industry. The White House can shrug its collective shoulders and make the issue go away.

Whoa, Nellie! Maybe not this time! Enter Henry Waxman…

Waxman: Hundreds Of Days Of WH E-Mails Missing

Henry Waxman fired the next volley in Congress’ fight with the Bush administration over missing White House e-mails, publicly challenging the administration’s version of events and setting a hearing for Feb. 15. The chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee strongly disputed White House spokesman Tony Fratto’s comments yesterday that [...]

New Hampshire Voting Machine Errors

Sure, it’s just one ward, in just one election. Still, the numbers are disturbing, to say the least.

Huge New Diebold Disparities Found in Manchester, Ward 5 During NH Hand Counts

As mentioned last night, in this disturbing article, the early results of the hand counts of one Diebold precinct in Dennis Kucinich’s election contest in New Hampshire are now being posted, as they come in, at this New Hampshire SoS page. As mentioned earlier today, NH SoS Bill Gardner told WMUR [...]

Friday $$$$$ News

January 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

TGIF. Indeed. There will be a break in blogging around here this weekend, prompted by more family “stuff”. It’s mostly fun “stuff”, so I’m looking forward to it.

Friday was marked by economic rumblings. We’ll give you links to a couple of the key bits of information:

US home building crashes to 27 year low

The GOP economic record lowers the post yet again. It’s not even possible to keep up with the stunning number of record lows they have hit with the US economy. How could they ruin such a previously great economy, so quickly? We used to be a country that welcomed competition, but that all changed with [...]

The Continuing Slide

This is really starting to scare the crap out of me: MBIA Inc. and Ambac Financial Group Inc., the two biggest bond insurers, have a more than 70 percent chance of going bankrupt, credit-default swaps show. Prices for contracts that pay investors if Armonk, New York- based MBIA or New York-based Ambac can’t meet their debt obligations [...]

Signs of the Times

Gold prices are set to break the $1,000 per ounce barrier this year according to industry analysts. Crude oil prices are still hovering around $90 a barrel. Raw materials prices for manufacturers are surging. Inflation last year rose at the highest rate since 1990. The American financial industry just suffered its [...]

But, the solution is…drum roll, please…

Bush Pushes Tax Cuts As Cure For Economy’s Ills

As expected, President Bush has publicly called on Congress to prioritize an economic stimulus package that will include immediate tax rebates for Americans. The new sense of urgency comes one day after [...]

Speaking of economic stimulus…Noticed a sign outside a real estate office this noon. Buy a home and they’ll give you a 42″ LCD TV. Let’s see…I spend $150,000 or more on a house and they’re kicking in a $600 TV. Wow! I’m also just cynical enough to figure most of the cost of that TV is gonna be built into the contract. Somehow. Somewhere.
