I don’t know what the Transportation Safety Administration THOUGHT they’d hear when they opened up their new blog to comments. Like, maybe, they thought it would be all wine and roses from flyers?
Hostile commenters ‘overwhelm’ TSA blog.
The Transportation Security Administration is having trouble with its new blog, which launched on Wednesday. The team of bloggers tried to set a friendly tone by introducing themselves with lines such as: “Hi! My name is Ethel and I’m from Wisconsin. I like music, I love ice cream, and I adore weird facts.” But by [...]

The GOP has some work ahead of it, needing to start pulling the multiple factions together. At the same time you start hearing a lot of dems say “either Clinton or Obama would be okay with me”, the leading GOP contenders have efficiently broken their party into almost more factions than you can count.
The anti-McCain faction splits into factions
For the last couple of months, Republicans were divided between those who supported John McCain and those who didn’t. As McCain emerged as the likely nominee, both sides grew larger and louder. But particularly after McCain’s victory in the Florida GOP primary, there seems to be another split, between McCain’s conservative critics who’ve decided it’s time [...]

It makes you wonder if the people who designed the NSA system even thought about this possibility. Certainly, they did. Didn’t they?
Terrorists to US: Can You Hear Me Now?
Fellow TPMmuckraker alumnus Justin Rood has an amazing story up at ABC’s Blotter. It turns out that the super-sophisticated NSA apparatus used for domestic surveillance by the Bush administration (call the effort the Terrorist Surveillance Program, or Program X, or what have you) is vulnerable to manipulation by the terrorists themselves. That’s according to [...]

I’m not sure this is something Hillary would welcome, but…can ya’ believe it?!?!?
Ann Coulter Endorses Hillary Clinton Over John McCain
“Boombox” Ann Coulter joined Sean Hannity for a fit of John McCain-bashing on Hannity & Colmes last night (1/31/08). With her garish make-up and tight sweater, the middle-aged Coulter was childishly agog with hyperactive anticipation for all the attention she calculated she’d garner from her latest ploy: an announcement that she’d vote for Hillary Clinton if McCain gets the nomination. One of her reasons? [...]

Female suicide bombers in Iraq. One report says both women today were “developmentally disabled”. That’s about as low as you can go.
Female Bombers Hit Baghdad Pet Markets
Concurrent suicide bombings struck pet bazaars in Baghdad today. Casualty reports are varying widely, but media sources are reporting anywhere from 45 to 70 people dead and up to 80 injured. Both bombings were reportedly carried out by women. The first detonated an [...]

No matter how many times you repeat the mantra, Iraq is not yet a success story. Not even close. Not when you back up and look at the big picture, not just a neighborhood.
Where’s The Plan, Mr. President?
Despite Republican and media assertions to the contrary, the “surge” in Iraq failed. The escalation, which President Bush promised would directly result in political progress in that country, has neither pressured the Iraqi government into much-needed action nor has it operated to produce long-term stability. Rather, [...]
The feeling grows:
An Iraq War Roundup: The Surge ‘Window’ Begins to Close & Other Forever War News
You don’t have to be a bloody genius to know that sooner or later the window of opportunity for Iraqi national reconciliation and a lasting reduction in sectarian violence as a result of the successes of the Surge would begin to close unless there was progress by the Baghdad government. Well, boys and girls, it would appear [...]

The President’s starting to sound like one of the worriers…saying there are now “serious signs” the economy is weakening. No kidding.
At the very least, the numbers are disappointing:
Jobs report much worse than usual
Forecasts prior to the announcement were for a soft 70,000+ new jobs though the results were much, much worse. The US economy is going in reverse thanks to years of Republican policies. The economic boom that most never experienced (outside of the board rooms) is crashing down. The unlucky Americans who never bounced back from [...]
Aw, heck. Let’s pound away a bit more, shall we?
Wall Street Journal: Budge Hits $3 Trillion as Debt Marks Bush Legacy
George W. Bush took office in 2001 with budget surpluses projected to stretch years into the future. But it’s almost certain [...]
Something’s seriously out of whack when you can balance those reports with this:
Exxon Mobil posts record profits
Exxon Mobil Corp. on Friday posted the largest annual profit by a U.S. company — $40.6 billion — as the world’s biggest publicly traded oil company benefited from historic crude prices at year’s end. Exxon also set [...]

There was that “debate” last night. Clinton and Obama. Completely different from the last one. Almost a “lovefest”! Heck, he even pulled out a chair for her. How about that?!? Chivalry lives. Who won? Here’s one take, but there are many others you can find, some with the same conclusion, some siding more with Clinton. Bottom line, they agree on many things.
Post-Debate Analysis
Here is my deep post-debate analysis: Anyone who votes Republican in 2008 needs their head examined. Seriously, Obama and Clinton are so head and shoulders above the GOP field, the Dems should walk away with it. Unfortunately, I can still see McCain winning it all. Having said that, I score the debate for Obama. [...]

It’s 24 hours old, but I couldn’t find any video last evening. So, as a weekend offering, take a few minutes and watch Mr. Keith rip into George W. Bush. Again.
PEEK: Olbermann’s Special Comment on FISA
President Bush has put protecting the telecom giants from the laws… ahead of protecting you from the terrorists [...]
This one’s good, too:
The stage is set for the showdown over FISA, telecom immunity
With the president having signed a 15-day extension of the existing surveillance law (the poorly-named “Protect America Act”), senators have finally crafted a plan on what happens next. Paul Kiel sets the stage. “So, after all that, after all the back room offers and counteroffers and fear-mongering and delaying, the Senate has finally struck a deal [...]
