We eat Mac and Cheese…

Mac & Cheese Sales Spike

Sales of boxed macaroni and cheese, a product category led by Northfield, Ill., based Kraft Foods, have experienced a significant rise. The product, which debuted 70 years ago, posted 10 percent growth in 2007, due in part to [...]

The Brawl

February 5, 2008 · No Comments

We’re not talking about Super Tuesday! Rather, some late night comedy.

The Story Behind a Late-Night Brawl

Last night’s scene on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” — showing Mr. O’Brien, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert brawling backstage, variously armed with a baseball bat, a fire extinguisher and, of course, an oversize recycling bin — is already an Internet hit. Jacques Steinberg has the backstory. “Had the pressures of scrounging up viewers during [...]

Forget Free Press

February 5, 2008 · No Comments

Just toss it out the window. When political pressure gets to this level, it’s bad, my friends. Really bad. Siegelman is the former Alabama governor who says his indictment and conviction were politically motivated.

60 Minutes Caves to Pressure from White House on Siegelman Story…

Well folks, seems that 60 Minutes is postponing (read “killing”) its Siegelman story. The excuse I am told for this lapse in ethics is that the network needs more time to vet the whistle-blower, Dana Jill Simpson. You see, the reason the network suddenly needs more time to vet Simpson is that the White House has launched a direct campaign inside [...]

If You Travel, You Knew Already

February 5, 2008 · No Comments

But, tonight, we have confirmation! The raw numbers! If you fly, you WILL be late. Sometime.

2007 Airline Delays 2nd Worst Ever

A quarter of domestic flights failed to arrive on time in 2007 _ the industry’s second poorest performance on record _ and analysts say it is likely to get worse. More than 26 percent of commercial flights in the U.S. arrived late or were canceled last year as [...]

Free Speech

February 5, 2008 · No Comments

I’m no fan of Bolton, but he certainly has a right to say what he wants. I’m guessing he’s not going to get any invitation to dinner at the White House anytime soon..

McConnell calls Bolton op-ed a ‘gross misrepresentation’

Former UN Ambassador John Bolton penned an op-ed in today’s WSJ claiming that the key judgments in the latest Iran NIE were “distorted,” written by “policy enthusiasts,” and put the “intelligence community’s credibility and impartiality on the line.” Today during a Senate threat assessment hearing, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) asked Director of National Intelligence Mike [...]

It Took A “Deal”

February 5, 2008 · No Comments

And Romney is upset. Really upset.

Huckabee Wins West Virginia on 2nd Ballot

Apparent deal with McCain thwarts Romney. Huckabee 52, Romney 47 Romney, Huckabee and Paul courted the state’s party convention, with an eye on its 18 seats to the national convention. Romney began with the largest bloc of delegates; McCain skipped the event [...]

McCain Screws Romney, Throws West Virginia to Huckabee

Super Tuesday started in West Virginia where the Republicans picked their 18 delegates at a convention. And they did it the only way Republicans know how to relate to democracy– with intrigue. On the first ballot Romney was [...]

My Media Musings

February 5, 2008 · No Comments

Looks like our friends in the media have gotten a bit caught up in pushing the Obama campaign. You know, all those recent reports on the huge crowds showing up for his appearances. Sure, he’s drawing lots of people, but you get the impression it’s SRO at many of them. Well…

Empty Seats at “Magical” Obama/Oprah Event

An old pal just sent me this image of today’s Obama event at UCLA in Los Angeles the Meadowlands in New Jersey. Politico’s Ben Smith adds: “You won’t see this in most of the news photography, because photographers are packed into press risers, opposite whatever backdrop — a crowd, a flag — the campaign prefers. But [...]

“Only” three times. Are you buying that?

CIA: Waterboarding Used On Only 3 Detainees

The CIA on three occasions shortly after the September 11 attacks used a widely condemned interrogation technique known as waterboarding, CIA Director Michael Hayden told Congress on Tuesday. “Waterboarding has been used on only three detainees,” Hayden told the Senate Intelligence Committee, publicly specifying the [...]

“This is a Stunning Fall”

February 5, 2008 · No Comments

There’s your qoute of the day, right up there in the headline for this post. He’s talking about a horrible report from the services sector of the U. S. economy…

Services Crater

If you’re wondering why the market is tanking again, this is it. “(Bloomberg) — U.S. service industries unexpectedly shrank in January at the fastest pace since the last recession as the housing slump deepened and consumer spending cooled. The Institute for Supply Management’s non-manufacturing index, which reflects almost 90 percent of the economy, fell to [...]

Wall Street wasn’t happy, either.

Dow Jones plunges more than 350 points.

Stocks tanked this afternoon “after a report showing a big slowdown in the services sector of the economy amplified fears that a recession is underway or imminent.” The report “showed business activity falling in January for the first time in five years.” The Dow Jones’s drop of more than 350 points marks the “worst loss [...]

It’s All About The Delegates

February 5, 2008 · No Comments

Forget the raw numbers, today’s votes are all about delegates, based on a complicated and confusing system of assigning those delegates. And, don’t forget, there are those “Super Delegates”, too.

The Grand Expectations Game

The media, it seems will be paying attention to delegate counts tonight, not a simple tally of who won what states. Chris Bowers listens in on a Clinton campaign conference call: “[T]he talk among the press corps was entirely about delegates, not winning states. As such, it seems that delegates are going to be the main [...]

Political History

Take one George Bush, mix in a balanced budget proposal and a few deficits and you get a most interesting history lesson…

How George learned to stop worrying and love the deficit

When it comes to red ink, George W. Bush has a colorful history. In 1997, as he began toying with a presidential campaign, Bush called for a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution because we “owe it to our children” to avoid deficits. In 2001, he described deficits as “dangerous” and promised to pay down [...]

As the returns roll in, we’re trying to provide some alternative things to occupy your attention. I’m fascinated by the Sibel Edmonds allegations. If true, they’re going to be difficult for the Bush Administration to just ignore.

Former CIA Analyst: ‘Sibel Edmonds is Talking About Treason, Cover-Up at Highest Levels of U.S. Government’

Former CIA analyst and international security and counter-terrorism expert Philip Giraldi has filed some of the American media’s best reports (even though we realize that’s not necessarily saying much) on the Sibel Edmonds case. If you missed it a week or two ago, Giraldi filed a detailed report on the [...]

I’ve not gotten all wrapped up in Twitter, fearing it would eat up too much time. However, this Super Tuesday is the perfect chance for somebody to combine Twitter with Google Earth. i’ve been keeping an eye on it all night.

Twitter getting lots of Super Tuesday votes

OK, this is my last Twitter post for a while, promise. But if you want a new way to “watch” Super Tuesday unfold, visit this Google Maps-Twitter mashup, which shows the power of location-based microblogging. The application is a Google [... ]

Election Day Economy

February 5, 2008 · No Comments

If you’re not already glued to the TV or computer, watching election returns and analysis, here’s something worth spending a few minutes on. Our economy, after all, is pretty much tanking. Here’s why. You can probably guess the starting point…

Barrelling into recession

Cheap oil and the quest for the American Dream house blew up in our faces. It’s explained in Something Had to Give How Oil Burst the American Bubble By Michael T. Klare “Over the past decade, this country has squandered approximately one and a half trillion dollars on imported oil, much of which has been poured down the tanks of grotesquely fuel-inefficient vehicles that were conveying drivers [...]

Here, courtesy of Chris Cillizza at the Washington Post, is a marvelous timetable of what you’ll be watching for after the polls close in a short time.

Super Tuesday Viewer’s Guide

Tonight promises an embarrassment of riches for political junkies. With 24 states holding either a Democratic or Republican vote for president, there is — dare we say it! — too much to read and watch. As always, The Fix aims to cut through the clutter for our community of readers. Below you’ll find [...]

Final Polls

February 5, 2008 · No Comments

If you weren’t confused before, you will be now. With just hours to go in the Super Tuesday voting in California, we stumbled onto a post that details two polls that can do nothing but make you shake your head in amazement.

Widely divergent final polls of the Democratic primary in California

Just click and read. If I quoted any content, it would give away the information. I don’t think I’ve ever seen two polls with such different results. Of course, my head’s in a fog (thank you, Zicam), so I’m not running at 100%. Throat feels slightly better, though. That’s a good thing.
