Full Disclosure

February 8, 2008 · Leave a Comment

This is the kind of thing that can go a long way towards tripping up the Hillary Clinton campaign. Just the hint that there might be something strange in their tax returns will drive some voters away. And it certainly gives Republicans something to yell about. Obama is right. Full disclosure is best.

Obama Calls on Clinton to Release Tax Returns

As anticipated, the recent news that Hillary Clinton has loaned $5 million to her campaign from her personal funds has revived questions regarding the Clinton’s finances. Political Radar reports: “I’ve released my tax returns,” Obama said today on his campaign plane, noting that Presidential candidates have a duty to be transparent and accountable. He said, “The American [...]

I guess when you have a crowd this partisan, you can get a cheer for saying about anything.

Bush Declares That Cheney Is ‘The Best Vice President In History’

During his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) this morning, President Bush told the crowd of raucous right-wing activists that he “appreciates the fact that” they “invited Vice President Cheney” to speak. Between intermittent cheers of “four more years,” Bush told the crowd, Cheney “is the best vice president in history.” Watch it: [...]

Ready to Rumble

Looks like the Clinton campaign has had it with MSNBC. David Shuster gets a bit “casual” in his conversation and gets campaign officials in his face, big time. His bosses, apparently, aren’t happy, either.

Clinton vs. MSNBC

Hillaryland has long had a problem with MSNBC, and they’ve chosen this moment — and David Shuster’s unfortunate use of a prostitution metaphor with [...]

Shuster Suspended For “Pimped Out” Comment

NBC NEWS STATEMENT REGARDING CHELSEA CLINTON COMMENT: “On Thursday’s “Tucker” on MSNBC, David Shuster, who was serving as guest-host of the program, made a comment about Chelsea Clinton and the Clinton campaign that was irresponsible and inappropriate. Shuster, who apologized [...]

UPDATE: This is turning into a BIG deal on the net. Lots of comments on both sides. Personally, I’ve heard much worse. And with CNN planning to put an “attitude” on their early evening program, we’ll probably hear much worse again. It was a stupid thing to say, but political pressure contributed to the suspension.

Shuster Suspended: The Apology & The Comments

The news of the suspension of MSNBC correspondent David Shuster for his “pimped out” comment drew another apology from Shuster moments ago during MSNBC’s Tucker, which Shuster was supposed to anchor tonight (Norah O’Donnell is substituting for Tucker Carlson:”…I used [...]

UPDATE 2: The tide is swinging in Shuster’s favor..

The Crucifixion Of David Shuster

First things first. when David Shuster asked, “…doesn’t it seem like Chelsea’s sort of being pimped out in some weird sort of way?” he couldn’t have been more wrong. It was inappropriate, demeaning, and unprofessional. In the wake of those remarks, he has apologized on air twice, expressed his regrets personally to the Clintons, and [...]

Haven’t heard a peep from old Fred Thompson since he dropped out. I guess I assumed he was sitting under a tree, doing his best Rip Van Winkle imitation.

With Romney Gone, It’s Thompson Time in the Veepstakes

Mitt Romney’s gracious withdrawal yesterday at CPAC effectively cemented the Republican nomination for Arizona Senator John McCain, a candidate that I don’t particularly like, but one is that is still far superior to either the empty promises of “change” from [...]

Obama Stronger Candidate Than Clinton Against McCain

It is risky predicting what will happen months before an election but at this time I believe that the next president will be either Barack Obama or John McCain. Consumer Confidence Sinks Even Lower

People’s confidence in the economy sank even lower amid heightened fears about shrinking job opportunities and the possibility the country is falling into recession. According to the RBC Cash Index, confidence dropped to a mark of 48.5 in early February, from 56.3 last month. The new reading was the worst since the index began in 2002 and surpassed the previous low reached [...]

The Tragedy of Drugs

February 8, 2008 · Leave a Comment

From right next door, in Oklahoma, comes a tragic story of a wasted life, thanks to drugs. But the story is really much bigger, of a system and attitude that should be changed.

Women Behind Bars

Oklahoman Tina Thomas has been caught up in the American war on drugs. In many respects, she fits the common profile of a woman doing time for a drug-related offense. Her crimes have ranged from possession to check forgery and theft, including an arrest for trying to steal a $64 comforter from Wal-Mart. Eventually sentenced to a two-year state prison term, Thomas admits that she committed her crimes to feed the “800-pound gorilla on my back that I just hadn’t been able to shake.” Thomas is part of an alarming statistical trend and a modern-day American phenomenon. For starters, [...]

Friday Night Must Read

February 8, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The one almost prompts an expletive, but I’ll keep it clean. Suffice it to say, this is downright scary.

FBI Deputizes Business

Today, more than 23,000 representatives of private industry are working quietly with the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security. The members of this rapidly growing group, called InfraGard, receive secret warnings of terrorist threats before the public does—and, at least on one occasion, before elected officials. In return, they provide information to the government, which alarms the ACLU. But there may be more to it than that. One business executive, who showed me his InfraGard card, told me they have permission to “shoot to kill” in the event of martial law.
InfraGard is “a child of the FBI,” says Michael Hershman, the [...]

Oooops. Even THAT didn’t help!

So much for the post-SOTU bounce

Historically, presidents get a little boost in the polls after a State of the Union address. It makes some sense — the nation gets to hear a president’s pitch, while seeing him get rounds of applause. Bush, however, manages to see his popularity drop after his SOTU. It’s almost as if people can barely stand the thought [...]

Dobson waits until it’s too late, backs Huckabee

Some people have the gift of timing. James Dobson isn’t one of them. There’s been ample speculation for months about when and whether the far-right evangelical would officially throw his support to one of the Republican presidential candidates. Dobson demurred, noting that he’s never formally endorsed a White House hopeful before, and he’s not going to [...]

The Weekend

February 8, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Well, we’ve survived another one and Thank Goodness It’s Friday. It’s a busy weekend for politics and those who revel in the game. It’s supposed to be nice, weatherwise, around here, so I’m hoping to give the dogs (and us) some exercise.

I’ll write it off to the “Friday Morning Rush”, but I could have strangled a fellow motorist this morning. The street that passes by our house widens to two lanes at one point, but the speed limit remains 30 miles an hour. This jerk gets in the left lane as soon as it appears, then realizes the car ahead of him is stopped to turn left. He darts back into the right hand lane, almost hitting the car ahead of me, then jumps back into the left lane as soon as he’s past the turning car. He speeds up to the traffic light ahead, waiting impatiently in the left lane. As soon as the light turns green, he speeds through the intersection and pulls ahead of the other cars in the right lane (all of which have been patiently waiting. When a car pulls from a side street, my idiot friend screeches back into the left lane and then realizes that the street narrows to a single lane once again. After all of that, he ends up three cars ahead of me, still stuck in a single lane of 30 mph traffic. Idiot. But, it was entertaining! The only thing that would have made it better would have been a traffic cop sitting on a side street with a radar gun, since he was obviously going more than 30 at times.

I feel better. Thanks.

Now, let’s chart our course through the weekend..

Weekend Races in 5 States

Barack Obama packed in a Nebraska crowd of over 10,000, Chelsea Clinton spoke up for her mom and Mike Huckabee laid out a full plate of Kansas events like he never heard the Republican race is supposed to be over. So goes the effort to win four Democratic and three Republican presidential nomination contests on the weekend _ a round getting less than [...]
