It’s time for alliances.

Hillary: “I Intend To Ask John Edwards To Be A Part Of Anything I Do”

ABC News’ Eloise Harper reports: Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., speaking in Lewiston, Maine, said that she would call on former No. Carolina Sen. John Edwards if she becomes president. “There is a lot John and I have in common. I will be a fighter, and I intend to [...]

The New CNN “Attitude”

February 9, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Hmmm. CNN is promising a healthy dose of “attitude” when the new Prime News debuts Monday. Looks like Leon Harris decided a bit of “attitude” might be good earlier in the day, too!

Tony Harris Takes on Missouri Gunman’s Brother

This morning on CNN Newsroom, Susan Roesgen was on location in Missouri where a man killed five people at a city council meeting last night. At the end of a lengthy interview with the gunman’s brother, Roesgen tossed it back [...]

It all depends on who’s telling the story…

Unexpected turn in the story of Obama’s teenaged drug use

It’s been a pleasant surprise that the presidential campaign has been largely indifferent to Barack Obama’s admitted drug use as a teenager. Voters don’t seem to care, reporters can’t find a reason to note its relevance, and even Republicans have generally decided there’s no point in pursuing the issue. Obama has been candid about it, [...]

The Agreements in Iraq

February 9, 2008 · 1 Comment

You know, the ones that have helped hold down the violence in recent months? Seems some of them are falling apart. And, you can guess what that means…

The Surge is Working?

Much of the so-called success of the surge strategy in Iraq has had little to do with the escalation of troop levels by the Pentagon, and much to do with agreements between US forces and local Sunni tribes and former insurgents. These “Awakening Councils” have agreed to patrol their own districts and combat Al Qaeda in Iraq forces in exchange for arms, money and other support from the US military. In esssence, American troops let Sunnis fight Sunnis so they wouldn’t have to do so, reducing American deaths, even while [...]

Shuster was wrong. But Hillary is “wronger” for pushing the issue to this extent. Just check the comments.

A Blowout

Huckabee with a big win in Kansas.

Kansas

In a way, the fact that Mike Huckabee won the Kansas caucuses isn’t all that surprising. It’s fertile evangelical territory for him, it’s right next door to his home state, and the caucus format probably helps him. But….still….what a blowout [....]

Sorry, but the economy is not chugging right along. Not even close. Even Wal-Mart’s feeling it.

Gift cards used to buy food

Republican economics at work again. Is this what they call compassionate conservatism? “Here’s a sign of how shaky the economy has become: Wal-Mart says its shoppers are redeeming their holiday gift cards for basic items — pasta sauce, diapers, laundry detergent — instead of [...]

Do you have an old Polaroid camera tucked away in a closet? I remember my folks had one of the original Polaroid Land Cameras, with the bellows. Wonder if they still have it. The value may be going up. Polaroid is getting out of the “instant picture” business. It’s been pretty much obliterated by digital photography, so the move was natural.

U.S. Funding Nuclear Research

In Russia. And, we all know who they like in the nuclear power war – Iran. Anybody see anything wrong with this situation?

Lou Dobbs Rails At White House Incompetence For Funding Nuclear Technology That May End Up In The Hands Of Iran

Lou Dobbs is outraged, outraged, I tell you!, at yet another example of lip service by the Bush Administration of caring about national security while doing something entirely opposite. No offense, Lou, but get in line. Apparently, our tax dollars are going to fund a Russian [...]

That Missed Vote

Clinton showed up. Obama showed up. McCain? Nope. Bad move, says Cafferty.

Cafferty: ‘Straight Talk Express wimped out.’

This week, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) caved to the right wing and skipped a key vote on the economic stimulus plan, despite voicing prior support for the package. CNN’s Jack Cafferty excoriated McCain for placing his personal ambitions over the public’s well-being: It was one of those moments that said quite a bit about somebody’s character. [...]

Saturday Rush Hour

February 9, 2008 · Leave a Comment

So far, so good. The day dawned, as promised, with clear skies and a predicted 62 degrees. Should be good for getting a few things done. I’m really ready for winter (such as it is) to be over. I know my friends in the north have been hit extremely hard this winter, so I honestly have little or nothing to complain about. It’s just tough to tackle yard chores in 40 degree weather.

Grab a cup o’ coffee and enjoy some really bad journalism:

Wash. Times hits Clinton on Lincoln Bedroom controversy

The far-right Washington Times, one of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s enterprises, has one of those classic hit-jobs today that’s almost impressive in its mendacity. The target: Hillary Clinton. The headline: “Hillary still in bed with ‘96 scandal.” Nearly one in five “HillRaisers,” the elite big-money fundraisers for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential campaign, have ties to [...]
