Feeling Confident?

Not many are, apparently.

Consumer Confidence Lowest In 16 Years

US consumer confidence dropped to a 16-year low this month, a level that has historically signalled recession. The Reuters/University of Michigan index of consumer sentiment fell 11 per cent for early February to 69.6, compared with [...]

Dooming A Campaign

February 16, 2008 · No Comments

This is the kind of statement that can doom a political campaign. I knew there would come a time..

Huckabee: ‘Running For Office Is Sort Of Like Being Waterboarded’

This morning, CNN ran a story “tracking the strain furious campaigning puts on the human body” for the presidential candidates. During the segment, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee joked that his campaign schedule is not providing enough time to sleep and that, for him, is “like being waterboarded”: HUCKABEE: I’m finding just out how long [...]

How About This!

February 16, 2008 · No Comments

Not good news. And, likely, we’ve been lied to. Again. They’re playing with numbers.

US Will Add to Surge by Summer

Andrew Gray of Reuters reports: “The United States will probably have more troops in Iraq this summer than it did before pouring in forces last year - even after a planned drawdown, a US general said on Friday.” [...]

The Digital Conversion

February 16, 2008 · No Comments

I’ve written before about all of the misinformation about the “digital transition” in television. Americans don’t understand what’s true and what’s a lie. Here’s one of the best pieces I’ve read that lays it on the line.

Airwave change to fill cable coffers?

TV’s big switch from analog to digital broadcasts will be complete in just one year, on Feb. 17, 2009, and many consumers are puzzling over how the shift will affect them: Do they need a new converter box, a new TV, a better antenna? But it’s pretty clear which business interests stand to gain [...]

Another Day, Another Tearful Episode

February 16, 2008 · No Comments

You might find it odd, but I, somehow, feel these episodes are sincere. Honest.

Hillary Clinton Weeps Over Womans’ Housing Woes

Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton’s voice filled with emotion today as she listened to the story of a mother and young daughter who said they were being forced from their home due to a skyrocketing adjustable mortgage. Appearing at a rally and question and answer session inside the Brat Shop, a [...]

It shouldn’t be difficult to do, using the detailed information in this post.

Victory in Iraq!

Ah, I love the smell of raw sewage in the morning. BAGHDAD (AFP) Baghdad is drowning in sewage, thirsty for water and largely powerless, an Iraqi official said on Sunday in a grim assessment of services in the capital five years after the US-led invasion. One of three sewage treatment plants is out of commission, one is working at stuttering capacity while a pipe blockage in the third means sewage is forming a foul lake so large it can be seen “as a big black spot on Google Earth,”[...]

Saturday Night’s All Right For…

February 16, 2008 · No Comments

Pizza. Let’s just chalk this episode up to “the best laid plans of…”. We seldom fight the restaurant crowds on Valentine’s Day, electing to wait until the following weekend. We were planning to go to our “favorite” nice place, not far from the house. Then, this morning, she decided a visit to a new Italian restaurant sounded better. I left a reservation request on their answering machine and we planned to hit their door at 6:30. About 4:00, they called and said they were completely booked, unless we wanted to wait until 9:00 or later. We decided another day would be better. So, we explored the alternatives, including falling back on our original plan, but decided to downscale tonight and save the “big” dinner for another night. So, we went to a neighborhood pizza place that we hadn’t visited for a couple of years. What a pleasant surprise! The salads and pizzas were twice the size we remembered and we brought the vast majority of the two pizzas home for another day. As they say, “all’s well that end’s well”.

I was shampooing carpets this afternoon, so didn’t have much time to hit my bloglines. And, tonight, I’m too darn full to concentrate. It’s like Thanksgiving, all over again.

Here’s one that caught my eye - you know how I am about electronic voting machines..

Mystery: NY Results Say Obama Got Zero Votes In 80 Districts

Black voters are heavily represented in the 94th Election District in Harlem’s 70th Assembly District. Yet according to the unofficial results from the New York Democratic primary last week, not a single vote in the district was cast for Senator Barack Obama. That anomaly was not unique. In fact [...]

Oh, don’t get into libraries with me..those of you who know me, know why…

Is America Ready For A First Lady Who Did Not Major In The Dewey Decimal System?

In a profile of Michelle Obama published by the New York Times, the 44-year-old Chicago native and Harvard grad revealed that she only recently finished paying off her student loans. Michelle, mother to daughters Sasha, 9 and Malia, 6, is described as “outspoken, strong-willed, funny, gutsy and sometimes sarcastic,” and [...]

Consumer Confidence

February 16, 2008 · No Comments

Welcome to Saturday morning. Nice stuff, huh?

Consumer confidence lower than during 2001 recession.

On his blog, Paul Krugman writes today that “the plunge in consumer confidence in recent weeks is pretty startling.” Krugman says that, according to the University of Michigan index, “consumer confidence is now lower than it ever was during the 2001 recession and aftermath.” According to Krugman, “bit by bit, the evidence is mounting that [...]

It’s Broken

February 16, 2008 · No Comments

No doubt about it, the Democratic nomination process is a mess.

A system in need of improvement

No matter who wins the Democratic nomination, or what happens in the general election, the DNC has to realize the nominating process is a flawed system. Democratic National Committee members—whose party is tied up in knots over the role of superdelegates as well as Florida and Michigan at this summer’s convention—already are talking about a review [...]
