Counting Those Doggone Delegates

February 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

How confusing. How VERY confusing.

Pick a number

Everybody’s very intrepidly attempting to conjure the current delegate count. Of course, the problems with Superdelegates, Florida, and Michigan make it difficult to decide which standards apply, but there seem to be more different totals than [...]

Dream On

Little dreamer, dream on.

Ticket Building The Hard Way

Some Democrats hunger for a “dream ticket” of Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton to maximize their chances of winning the presidency this fall, while many Republicans think a team of their remaining front-runners, John McCain and Mike Huckabee, might unite their party and allow it to hold the White House. If history and human nature are any guides, though, the chances are slim that either will happen and [...]

The Kennedy Conspiracy

February 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Well, now. This could get really interesting. I’ve been fascinated by theories that the mafia was behind John Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas. Now, some fascinating new papers have popped up.

Dallas DA: Jack Ruby docs ‘too important to keep secret’

The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office has announced the discovery of a trove of documents relating to the assassination of John Kennedy. Among the documents is an alleged transcript of a conversation between Lee Harvey Oswald and Jack Ruby, planning the assassination together on behalf of the Mafia. This document has aroused [...]

No, make that EXCELLENT point. At times, the media just gets too caught up in what they’re covering and try to point the story in a certain direction.

Memo To Media Figures: The Presidential Race Isn’t Being Conducted To Entertain You

WaPo’s Howard Kurtz has a pretty good rundown of how lopsided and imbalanced the press coverage of Hillary has been this cycle, and I wanted to flag this little nugget that he slips in at the end of the piece [...]

‘Immunity-Enhanced’ Food: Coming To A Menu Near You

California has long led the country in the creation and fortification of urban food ways. The state was on the forefront of restaurants devoted to raw food and was the birthplace of the organic produce movement. In Los Angeles, vegan restaurants are nearly as prevalent as hamburger joints. Now, restaurant menus here are marrying the broader commercial movement of “functional” foods — those stuffed with heavy doses of vitamins and antioxidants — and [...]

About nothing. This kind of petty political posturing bugs the heck out of me. Somebody please convince me that this is valid politics.

Did Obama plagiarize? Clinton team says yes

Sen. Hillary Clinton’s campaign wants everyone to see a campaign speech made in 2006 by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick just before he won that office and a recent speech by Sen. Barack Obama. In his speech Patrick responded to the charge by his opponent that he was a fine speaker capable of tossing off inspirational words but not a politician with results. All words no action. Patrick responded by [...]

UPDATE: Obama: Should Have Mentioned The Source

Barack Obama acknowledged today that he probably “should have” given Deval Patrick credit for lines he used at Saturday’s Jefferson Jackson Dinner in Wisconsin but added that he didn’t think “it was too big of a [...]

Quote of the day from the president. This ain’t World War Two!

Bush: I “Don’t Think” The War Has Anything To Do With The Economy

This morning on NBC’s Today Show, President Bush denied that the there’s any link between the faltering U.S. economy and $10 billion a month being spent on the Iraq war. In fact, according to Bush, the war is actually helping the economy: [...]

Clinton Team Worries About Texas Delegate Rules

Supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton “are worried that convoluted delegate rules in Texas could water down the impact of strong support for her among Hispanic voters there, creating a new obstacle for her in the must-win presidential primary contest,” the Washington Post reports. “What Clinton aides discovered is that in certain targeted districts… Clinton could [...]

It’ll be interesting to watch the Stock Markets as these key reports begin to arrive this week. Intereresting. But, probably, not pleasant.

Big Hurt In Store For Retail

After the worst holiday season in five years, Wall Street is bracing for a slew of ugly profit reports from retailers and downbeat forecasts for 2008. Major chains – from Wal-Mart to Macy’s to Gap – will report earnings for the crucial fourth quarter beginning this week. With the housing and credit markets in turmoil, gasoline prices soaring and [...]

Huckabee Raises Money in the Caymans

The Argument

B. Clinton Quarrels With Anti-Abortion Protestors At Ohio Rally

A frustrated Bill Clinton angrily raised his voice in response to heckling from pro-life protestors at a rally here tonight. When protestors first held up signs reading “Abortion Kills Children,” the former president responded calmly, outlining his wife’s past policies to help children and mothers. But when interrupted a second time by a more vocal heckler, Clinton shouted in response and stabbed his finger at the protestor. “I gave you the answer. We [...]

It’s Monday

February 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

And the other half of my household is still battling a nasty bug. Fever, cough, ugh. And, of course, we got rid of the rain and cold, just in time for the workweek. That bit of complaining aside, today was beautiful – sunny skies with temps in the 50’s. The grouchy side of my personality would point out that was pretty much what was forecast for Sunday. It just never happened.

Looks like we got somewhat “sucker punched” by the USDA with that huge beef recall announced this weekend. It’s a bit counter-productive to announce a recall after most of the meat has been eaten, isn’t it?

USDA sort of, kind of, issues largest ever beef recall

I’d say it’s being generous to refer to this so-called “largest ever” recall as being half-assed. While it’s good to see the USDA actually showing interest in regulation of a dodgy industry instead of the usual practice of waiting until someone gets sick or dies, ordering a “recall” and then admitting that “almost all of this product is likely to have been consumed” is not exactly impressive. How many other meat packing shops are [...]
