I’m not sure it’s going to work out the way Mr. Rove thinks it will. I could be wrong, but I’m just tellin’ ya’…

Rove: ‘Thank God’ Bush invaded Iraq.

Yesterday in Vancouver, Karl Rove “acknowledged that Bush is a very unpopular president, partly because of the Iraq war,” but emphasized that Americans should be happy that Bush invaded Iraq: “But I think that people will look back at the Iraq war and say ‘Thank God, he had the courage to do what he did.’ [...]

Remember BetaMax?

February 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The classic technology battle – Beta versus VHS. We all know how that ended. I still have a box full of Beta tapes at home. Here we go again, 2008-style. For those who are “early in” when it comes to technology, there was a choice. Now, there is not. So, who thought HD DVD would win? Who thought Blu-Ray would win. Ladies and gentlemen – we have a winner! And, of course, a loser. An expensive loser, for many.

HD DVD is History

I’ve intentionally held off on purchasing any high definition DVD players until this little format war played itself out, which is now the case: “Toshiba’s decision to no longer develop, make or market high-definition HD DVD players and recorders will mean consumers can start feeling [...]

In you’re wondering, I only get stuck once. I learned my lesson. I’m still waiting to make the jump.

Better Late, Than Never

February 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Consider this your “story of the evening”. Not that it’s really all that important, but it’s certainly strange. I guess I really shouldn’t be surprised at anything that comes out of Pat Robertson’s mouth, but – my goodness! And, yes, there is video on the link.. Absolutely amazing..

Pat Robertson producer ‘hopped up on coke?’ Developing…

MSNBC’s Willie Geist noted with astonishment on Morning Joe that Pat Robertson, a leader of the religious right, “sort of outed his producer on his show the other day.” “Our producer showed me something several years ago,” Robertson stated on [...]

Congress shouldn’t have to resort to this, just to dodge a Bush Administration political ploy. Still, they have every right to do it.

Dems Preempt Bush Recess Moves

It’s gotten to be a common occurrence. When Congress has a scheduled recess, the Democratic leadership keeps the Senate (and sometimes the House) in pro forma session in order to prevent any administration recess tomfoolery. The main concern, of course, [...]

They Have Some Work to Do

February 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Indeed, the Clinton Camp obviously needs to alter the message. What they’re doing now ain’t working. Or, perhaps, what Obama is doing is over-producing. Whatever the explanation, this isn’t good news for Clinton…

Obama passes Clinton in Gallup tracking poll

Gallup’s latest tracking poll shows what Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign had hoped for and what Sen. Hillary Clinton’s had feared, that the senator from Illinois’s momentum would continue to eat into Clinton’s core supporters–women, Hispanics and hard-core Democrats. This is how Gallup’s Jeffrey M. Jones put it: [...]

It’s A Shame

You’d think the Supreme Court would, at least, agree to hear the case. Refusing to do so simply clouds the water and raises more questions than answers.

Supreme Court rejects warrantless wiretapping case.

The Supreme Court “has rejected a challenge to the Bush administration’s domestic spying program” brought forth by the American Civil Liberties Union. The court offered “no comment explaining why they turned down the appeal,” which seeks to allow a lawsuit over the warrantless wiretapping program. It was dismissed by a lower court “because the plaintiffs [...]

Reality Check

February 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

As the Democratic Nomination seems to be tipping in Obama’s direction, an increasing number of policy wonks are digging through his speeches, trying to figure out exactly what the policies of an Obama Administration might be. For many of those folks, it’s a confusing journey.

Craig Crawford on Obama & Substance

In “Yes We Can WHAT?,” Craig Crawford writes at his CQPolitics blog today: “The news media’s long-awaited scrubbing of Barack Obama’s concrete plans for governing has begun and, not surprisingly, it doesn’t take long. The Democratic presidential contender’s famously inspirational speeches offer little sustenance for wonks. […] Obama’s supporters and advisers refer pesky policy inquiries to the [...]

Good Question

February 19, 2008 · 1 Comment

The Hutch Report asks a good question. I’m inclined to think the California case was an isolated one. But, we’re trying out best to stick to locally produced products that we feel are better for us AND help out the area farmers. We’re buying beef that is raised naturally, with no hormones or steroids, and humanely processed just a few miles from here. The producers actually take the time to “dry age” the beef, a old-time process that has largely been eliminated, in favor of getting the meat to market quicker. But, it gives the beef great flavor and supurb tenderness.

We also subscribe to a novel “Basket of the Month” club, where we get a bushel basket filled with locally produces fruits, vegetables, meats, produce, etc. It’s all part of a move toward “sustainable agriculture” and makes us feel we’re doing our part. Wander on over to the Arkansas Food website for more details.

By taking part in something similar in your area, you can avoid these concerns…

Is It Safe To Eat Red Meat After Recall?

A few days ago, the USDA decided to recall almost 150 million pounds of meat products that were processed at one California meat processing plant. This recall was only done after the fact by the USDA when the Humane Society entered that plant at random and starting filming the conditions in which cattle were housed and slaughtered. After watching some of the undercover footage taken by the Humane Society at this one meat packing plant, I must admit [...]

Trent Charlton knew the risks when he borrowed $10,000 from his 401(k) and cut his retirement savings in half. But Charlton, a 40-year-old account executive at an Irvine, Calif., trucking company, said he had little choice because he and his wife could not keep up [...]

Don’t Go There

February 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

This story has been bumping around the internet for several days. I truly find it difficult to believe that it could happen in 2008. Not that we’ve eliminated all kinds of gender discrimination, but this simply seems stupid.

KS School Bars Female From Officiating Boys Games, Says She Can’t Have Authority Over Males

Mike Huckabee would be proud. How can you be anything but disgusted with this sort of misogynistic behavior? This is one of those stories that makes you yell at your tee vee, but I was happy to see that all the Kansans interviewed in this clip were as upset [...]

Ugly Now

February 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

And, I’m afraid, it’s gonna get uglier by convention time. But, if you’re a political junkie, it’s shaping up to be one heck of a fight.

Clinton Campaign Resembles the Undead

The Clinton campaign is taking on some of the characteristics of a vampire, zombie, or other undead creature that requires a stake through the heart or other special measures to kill. “I swear it is not happening now, but as we get closer to the convention, if it is a stalemate, everybody will be going after everybody?s delegates,” a senior Clinton official told me Monday afternoon. All the rules will be going out the window.” What’s that ‘Clinton official’ talking about? He/she is talking about going after Obama’s delegates. No, [... ]

I wondered, as I drove by a neighborhood gas station, why they didn’t have any prices posted. Probably because they couldn’t keep up with the changes.

Gone, But Not Dead

Castro called it quits today. It is somewhat of a milestone. Not that much will likely change. We’ve already announced the embargo is staying in place. For now.

Castro Resigns

Still not dead though. Fidel Castro resigned as president and commander-in-chief of Cuba, after almost 50 years as the country’s leader, the official daily Granma said. “I neither will aspire to nor will I accept, the position of president of the council of state and commander-in-chief,’’ Castro wrote, according to Granma in its online edition. “My only [...]

Will this bailout work? I’m not thinkin’ it’s a very smart idea. But, my name’s not Bernanke. either. Ooops. Sorry for calling it a “bailout”. Chris (with tongue in cheek) says it’s not…

US banks gobble up government free money

But please do not call this a government bailout. Just because banks are “borrowing” tens of billions from US taxpayers below inflation rates under new conditions (which are troubling) doesn’t mean it’s a handout. Hundreds of billions down the drain, but all is forgiven. Take one guess who is getting stuck with the bill? Surprise! It’s you! “The TAF … allows the banks to borrow money against [...]

Tuesday’s Tribulations

February 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

One down, four to go. We’re still passing that darn sore throat, cough, fever thing around the house. I thought we’d be more immune once the kids grew up, moved out, and stopped bringing all those germs home from school. Nope. I truly believe the germs are bigger, badder, and nastier than they were 15 years ago. At any rate, we seem to be making some progress.

It’s primary election day in Wisconsin and Hawaii. And for the GOP in Washington State. By the way, I’m not staying up late enough to find out how Hawaii votes. Feel free to update in the comments, should you feel so moved.

But, we begin the fun and frivolity tonight with news of some backdoor political maneuvering in Washington..

Long before he overhauled Medicare and tried to do the same with Social Security, President Bush staked his domestic agenda on education policy by persuading Congress to pass a law that tied federal aid to improvements in students’ test scores [...]
