The Hutch Report asks a good question. I’m inclined to think the California case was an isolated one. But, we’re trying out best to stick to locally produced products that we feel are better for us AND help out the area farmers. We’re buying beef that is raised naturally, with no hormones or steroids, and humanely processed just a few miles from here. The producers actually take the time to “dry age” the beef, a old-time process that has largely been eliminated, in favor of getting the meat to market quicker. But, it gives the beef great flavor and supurb tenderness.
We also subscribe to a novel “Basket of the Month” club, where we get a bushel basket filled with locally produces fruits, vegetables, meats, produce, etc. It’s all part of a move toward “sustainable agriculture” and makes us feel we’re doing our part. Wander on over to the Arkansas Food website for more details.
By taking part in something similar in your area, you can avoid these concerns…

This recall was only done after the fact by the USDA when the Humane Society entered that plant at random and starting filming the conditions in which cattle were housed and slaughtered. I have some family things to handle that will occupy much of the remainder of the afternoon, dog baths and grooming, kids coming for an impromptu spaghetti supper (thanks to locally grown spring mix and lettuce, heirloom tomatoes, fresh whole wheat pasta and a couple of pounds of hormone-free ground beef via the “Basket of the Month” program that I’ve written about before.)
