Out There, Again

Bill Clinton is on the loose, campaigning for Hillary. He seems to be better behaved this time, but he’s still going after Obama…

Bill On Obama Mailers: “Pure Garbage”

Bill Clinton weighed in for the first time this afternoon on the direct mailers Barack Obama’s campaign sent Ohio voters, calling the pieces “pure garbage.” Hillary Clinton’s campaign has spent the last two days making a fuss about the mailers, which denounce her position on NAFTA and criticize her [...]

Dems Push for FEC Probe of McCain

The Democratic National Committee filed a complaint (pdf) today with the FEC concerning Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) campaign financing problem. So where do things stand then? Keep in mind this is an unprecedented situation, so it’s not really clear where [...]

McCain’s “potential headache from the FEC” — it’s potentially criminal

John McCain claims to be the champion of campaign finance reform. That’s why his attempt to scam the campaign finance laws is an even more important story. The DNC filed its FEC complaint against McCain this morning. Violating the FEC’s campaign spending limits could result in criminal penalties. The right wingers never [...]

Spoiler Candidate?

February 25, 2008 · No Comments

So, Ralph Nader is in. Will he be just a blip on the radar screen of the 2008 campaign? That the analysis I’m hearing from most points tonight. But, I find some of the things he said in an interview with The Politico website interesting. He’s not pulling punches and just may be able to make a difference. He ain’t gonna win, but he’ll certainly liven up any debates! Go. Read.

Nader unloads on Obama, Clinton

In Politico interview, Nader says two leading Dems are spineless, dull and poorly scripted; Nader enters race in boon to GOP [...]

And, he unloaded on Fox Business News. I must admit, he’s pretty darn quick…

Ralph Nader to Alexis Glick: “You Have Displayed Political Bigotry”

Ralph Nader appeared on Fox Business Network this morning in his first television interview since announcing his Presidential candidacy on Meet the Press yesterday. Alexis Glick interviewed the candidate on Money For Breakfast. Things got a little heated when Glick [...]

The Slide Continues

February 25, 2008 · No Comments

Watching MSNBC while getting ready for work this morning, I caught Erin Burnett getting all bubbly about how a huge IPO by Visa Credit Cards was going to be a big thing for the market. So, if Visa gets 19 Billion bucks, my interest rate will go down, right? And those late fees will disappear?

Of course, the overriding economic news today came from the housing market.

The backlog of unsold homes continued to pile up in January, a sign that home prices will continue to drop as would-be buyers hold out for better deals [...]

Let’s Dissect a Campaign

February 25, 2008 · No Comments

In particular, the Clinton campaign. Do a little poking under the hood. And see if we can’t figure out where (and why) things went wrong.

Let’s Get Real

Today’s Frank Rich column: “Clinton fans don’t see their standard-bearer’s troubles this way. In their view, their highly substantive candidate was unfairly undone by a lightweight showboat who got a free ride from an often misogynist press and from naïve young people who lap up messianic language as if it were Jim Jones’s Kool-Aid. Or as [...]

Then, there’s this little dust-up:

Clinton Camp’s Maggie Williams: “Enough”

New tough-as-nails campaign manager hits back at Obama camp for their angry response to Drudge posting photo of him in traditional Somali dress (though she doesn’t deny charge that campaign circulated it). Calls it an “attempt to create the very divisions they claim to decry.”…Comes after Obama campaign manager Plouffe took fabled [...]

But, wisdom beyond her years…

“I didn’t know how much Iraq means to me, until I saw It destroyed”

Sixteen year old Iraqi blogger Sunshine puts Bush’s disaster into a better perspective than I or any other American blogger could: “The new operation is about to start as you know, I feel like it’ll work this time, although not everyone think so, because the troops announced the operation before it starts .. I still have hope, I don’t know why.. All the [...]

Words Have Power

February 25, 2008 · No Comments

John Deeth, who blogs from my old home state of Iowa, watched “Saturday Night Live” and noted the power of the words in one particular skit. Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee’s appearance seems to be getting most of the post-show chatter. But something else is catching some attention now…

Politically Incorrect

…This weekend, guest hosting on her old Saturday Night Live gig, Tina Fey offered a rant worthy of her predecessor Dennis Miller, and an endorsement so blatant that Obama should demand equal time. It was a brilliant piece of work, because in just FOUR WORDS Fey summed up Hillary’s problem, and made [...]

The Tactic of The Day

February 25, 2008 · No Comments

It’s like the Clinton Campaign reaches into a big cookie jar every couple of days and pulls out a piece of paper with a campaign tactic on it.

Clinton Tries Out Populist Approach

Blasting “companies shamelessly turning their backs on Americans” by shipping jobs overseas and railing that “it is wrong that somebody who makes $50 million on Wall Street pays a lower tax rate than somebody who makes $50,000 a year,” Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton increasingly sounds like one of her old Democratic rivals, former senator John Edwards of North Carolina. Eager to recapture the white, working-class voters who favored her in some of the early primaries but who have since shifted to Sen. Barack Obama, Clinton traded her usual wonky style this weekend for a fiery, [...]

Fiery? From the clips I heard, she came off almost screaming. Wonky may work better. We’ll see.

Prozac, used by 40m people, does not work say scientists

Prozac, the bestselling antidepressant taken by 40 million people worldwide, does not work and nor do similar drugs in the same class, according to a major review released today. The study examined all available data on the drugs, including results from clinical trials that the manufacturers chose not to publish at the time. The trials compared the effect on patients taking the drugs with [...]

Stepping Back

February 25, 2008 · No Comments

And taking a good, long, look at the American political system. This is really quite fascinating and underscores my believe that you must look outside your normal media sources to get another view of things.

Change You Can’t Believe In

I have a young visitor (30 something) from Germany this week. Finding her surprisingly up-to-date on our democratic primary, I asked her where she has been getting her information. She referred me to a German newspaper that has an English edition. I refer you to this excellent article. It will give you an idea of [...]

Change of Heart

February 25, 2008 · No Comments

The scare-tactics just weren’t working. At least not for the most of us. So, we ended up with a bit of an admission from the administration.

Bush admin: Never mind, the sky isn’t falling

Since the expiration of the poorly-named Protect America Act, the White House and its allies have gone to great lengths to argue that we should be absolutely terrified. Those mean ol’ Democrats in Congress have refused to give the president everything he wants, and the consequences, they’ve claimed, will likely be catastrophic. Congressional Republicans even [...]

True to form, the Bush Administration’s not completely backing down:

White House lashes at criticism of ’scare tactics’

The White House has opened the week with some harsh words for critics accusing the president of “scare tactics” in his press for new terrorist surveillance legislation, with the Bush administration insisting that congressional inaction has left Americans vulnerable. “There is an old rhetorical tactic in Washington: [...]

Under Scrutiny

February 25, 2008 · No Comments

I browse blogs from both sides of the political aisle and, I must say, the conservative group over at “Blogs for victory” are pointing to a growing pile of evidence that’s beginning to make me think that Obama stretched the truth a bit (kind enough way to say it?) when he told that Afghanistan story during last week’s debate.

More Knocks on Obama’s Afghan Story

Stephen Spruiell over at NRO has gathered quite a collection of e mails from military personnel - past and present - who dispute Obama’s assertion of ill-equipped US troops - a sample will do for here, but you should go check them all out: I am an Infantry Captain. I have deployed to Afghanistan twice, OEF [...]

Obviously Confused

February 25, 2008 · No Comments

John McCain seems to be having a bit of a problem keeping his story straight. First, he sees our troops in Iraq for hundreds of years. Except that today, the story changed.

McCain: Iraq War “Will Be Over Soon”

In a townhall meeting today, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) was asked about the status of the situation in Iraq. McCain, who notoriously said last month that U.S. troops could be in Iraq for another 10,000 years, said “the war will soon be over”: “That reminds me[...]

Exhausted

February 25, 2008 · 2 Comments

That’s me. Exhausted from the weekend. Looks like next weekend is all planned out, already. I have dandelions sprouting in the front yard, so I need to spread some weedkiller on the lawn. Plus, as I noted in the post just below, I’ll be buying some new fencing and patching some holes. I think the drama of the missing pup is part of what zapped me!

However, today, morning fog burned away before noon and we had an almost spring-like day. Spring, though, means “rain”, and that’s exactly what we got by afternoon.

Now, let’s dig into the “blatant stupidity” file from the weekend. Let me explain something about network television and how the signal gets to your local TV station. It’s delivered via satellite. I spent the better part of the last ten years dealing directly with that type of technology. It’s called “point to multi-point”, meaning one signal goes up to the satellite and can be picked up by multiple points on the ground below. Much more cost-effective than running fiber-optic cable from New York or Los Angeles to every TV station in America. However, that means that scenarios such as described below, must be blamed on the local station. Either their network satellite receiver went out (and they all have backups) or somebody deliberately blacked out the program. If there were transmission problems at the network, EVERY station would experience the problem. That did not happen.

Update on the Media Blackout of 60 Minutes story…

Okay, people from Northern Alabama and Mobile - very southeast - are letting me know that the show was blocked - black screen - during the Siegelman segment of 60 Minutes ONLY. I also got one email from Florida saying that they had strange GOP “Dem’s are soft on terror,” commercials. People, let me make myself clear here. If it is indeed true that so many people were blocked from viewing a show about DOJ corruption, then we are well into the arms of fascism. Please [...]

Note that the family that owns the station that blacked out the story is a sizable contributor to the GOP.
