We have another recall, ladies and gentlemen!

Mega Brands Recalls 2.4 Million Magnetic Toys

Toy distributor Mega Brands Inc. recalled about 2.4 million Chinese-made toys Monday, because small magnets could fall out and cause internal damage. These tiny magnets could fall out of the toys and be swallowed or inhaled by children. If more than one magnet is swallowed, they can [...]

Within The Margin of Error

But, still, quite interesting.  Just remember, there’s a ton of time between now and November.  Not to mention, the conventions.

Beliefs of The Church

March 17, 2008 · No Comments

This isn’t going to help clear up Obama’s preacher problems. Not at all. There’s some extremely strong sentiment expressed in some of the rules.

Obama’s Church Web Site ‘Disappears’ the ‘Black Value System’ (Update: They Missed a PDF)

Sometime between April 2006 and today, the church Barack Obama has attended for 20 years, Trinity United Church of Christ, quietly edited the “About Us” page of their web site, removing their statement of commitment to “the Black Value System written by [...]

This is absolutely ridiculous. Stupid. Asinine.

President’s Helo Now Costs More Than Air Force One

You know something’s wrong when the President’s helicopter starts costing more than the President’s jet. The Washington Post focuses on the rapidly increasing costs of replacing Marine One’s aging helicopters. Cost estimates have jumped from $6 billion to more than [...]

From Their Points of View

March 17, 2008 · No Comments

How’s it going in Iraq?  All depends on who you talk to, but a couple of big name folks seem to think things are pretty darn good.  Surprised?

McCain, Cheney reject Petraeus analysis of Iraq

The debate over the U.S. policy towards Iraq (and the debate over the debate) has taken several twists and turns over the course of five long and painful years, but if there’s one thing I thought the entire Republican establishment agreed on, it’s this: don’t disagree with Gen. David Petraeus. His judgment is sacrosanct, his [...]

NEW REPORT: ABU GHRAIB PRISONERS PACKED IN ICE WATER-FILLED GARBAGE CANS AND SENT INTO SHOCK, MILITARY POLICE SAY

Muslim prisoners held in Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison were submerged in water-filled garbage cans with ice or put naked under cold showers in near-freezing rooms until they went into shock, Sgt. Javal Davis, who served with the 372nd Military Police Company there, has told a national magazine. Davis, from the Roselle, N.J., area, said [...]

The Campaign Connection

Interesting thoughts below on negative campaigning.  Make sure you skim through the comments, too.

An Ode to Negative Campaigning

Was Hillary Clinton’s “3 am” attack ad a vicious smear aimed at Barack Obama, or was it part of a longstanding tradition that’s “essential to democratic politics and ultimately yields a more engaged and better-informed public”? [...]

Spring Break In Iraq

March 17, 2008 · No Comments

McCain and Cheney are spending some time in Iraq, destination of trendy spring breakers everywhere.

Five Years Later, Iraqis Still Lack Basic Services, Believe Surge Has Made Security Situation Worse

This week marks the fifth anniversary of the U.S. invasion in Iraq. While security has improved, there are growing concerns by both Iraqis and U.S. military officials that it will rise again in the near future. As has been widely noted, this lull in violence has not led to political progress. It also hasn’t [...]

The Wright Stuff

March 17, 2008 · No Comments

This story, as they say, “has legs”.

Wright’s Church Comes to His Defense

The controversy over Barack Obama’s pastor is not dying down yet. As I write this, Google News has more than 1,200 articles on it. Conservative writer Bill Kristol got his facts wrong this morning. Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s church has issued a strong statement condemning the media’s characterization [...]

Crippled

That’s life.  Crippled, for far too many of us. Carl lays it on the line and explains how we got here…

Olly Olly Ox Unfree!

The dynamic of the American economy is a quasi-free market. Or rather, it was. The underlying mechanism of a free market goes something like this: I have a need, say, food. Company A determines there’s money to be made in supplying me with food, but [...]

TV Worth Watching

March 17, 2008 · No Comments

Bill Moyers still knows how to do TV journalism.  This, my friends, is how it’s done.

Bill Moyers Journal: Going after the whistleblowers

It’s infuriating that the Bush administration has gone so far around the Constitution without any accountability from those who are charged with oversight, yet the few journalists and whistleblowers that have tried to shine a light on the actions of the Bush administration are fighting to not go to jail. [...]

Ugly. REALLY Ugly.

March 17, 2008 · No Comments

Even the usually optimistic Erin Burnett was frowning on Morning  Joe today, saying it was really tough to find any silver lining to the economic news that developed over the weekend. Crude oil at record highs.  The dollar at record lows. Gold at record highs.  And, the biggest news of all, the B.S. Bailout.

Fasten your seatbelts, put your trays up, and put your chairs in the upright position

A year ago, Bear Stearns — up until fairly recently a leading investment, securities and brokerage firm — saw its stock trading for $170 a share. By the end of the calendar year, it was about $88 a share. As recently as four days ago, it was $57 a share. Yesterday, the entire company, in [...]

Financial Mess Heats Up

The financial mess that our country is in is heating up… big time. Hold on folks, it’s really going to be a rough ride: WHAT are the consequences of a world in which regulators rescue even the financial institutions whose recklessness and greed helped create the titanic credit mess we are in? Will the consequences be [...]

The Economy: Are You Scared Yet?

Gold at $1,000 an ounce. Oil at $110 a barrel. Record home foreclosures. Steeply rising inflation. Worrisome employment numbers. Personal bankruptcies surging again. Are you worried about the economy yet? Are you beginning to be very, very frightened? And if not, why not? Bad times follow good times, just as good times follow the bad. That’s a natural process. It’s what economists call [...]

Economic Numbers

March 17, 2008 · No Comments

Melding a bit of politics in with the economy, we see some more positive movement for Hillary Clinton.

The Economic Downward Spiral: Will It Trigger Nostalgia For The Clinton Years?

The American economy is spiralling downward. The latest convulsions on Wall Street are the big stories driving the news cycle. One consistent finding in the polling is that Hillary Clinton, no doubt benefitting from the economic performance of the country during her husband’s Presidency, is favored on the issue of the economy. In Pennsylvania,  [...]

Monday Musings - St. Patrick’s Day

March 17, 2008 · No Comments

Busy weekend behind us, it was tough to get going on this Monday. it was one of those days when the alarm clock seemed to go off just minutes after we went to sleep. In reality, it was almost a full eight hours. It’s now evening and I’m beginning to appreciate the extra daylight at this end of the day, although adjusting is always a problem.

Woke up this morning to a bevy of bad economic news.  We’ll be talking about much of it through the course of the evening.  But I’m leaning toward politics for our foray into the news and commentary of the day.
