It’s right around 11:30 pm as this post is made. If you, like I, follow the cable news channels closely, you’ve certainly caught some of Hardball with Chris Matthews. I’m guessing you either love him or hate him. Nobody could watch and come away saying, ‘Oh, he’s just okay”. The New York Times Magazine has a lengthy and not all flattering piece in this Sunday’s edition, but you can read it now. Enjoy.
Portrait of the Blowhard as a Middle-Aged Egomaniac
This Sunday’s New York Times Magazine will feature a cover story on Chris Matthews. But you don’t have to wait until the weekend; you can read it today. And it’s not nearly as boring as it sounds. It’s well-written, unflattering, and not a little sad. The NYT’s Mark Leibovich presents a man who is boasting and insecure, who refers to himself in the third person and [...]

If you thought Mike Huckabee had slipped quietly back into private life, think again.
Mike Huckabee Has A Secret Plan, Website Countdown
During the early stages of the primary season, none of the candidates seemed to enjoy his turn in the spotlight more than former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. And from the looks of things, it appear as if the Huck has no plans to quit the scene anytime soon. Over at his eponymous website, [...]

Lieberman campaign officially to blame for crashing own website
Remember when Senator Lieberman’s website went down the night before the Democratic primary back in August 2006? I do because we covered it on CNN. The Lieberman camp was convinced they’d been attacked and pointed fingers at the Ned Lamont campaign and its supporters. We had to be careful how we reported the story at the time because [...]

There’s been a lot of discussion about this story on talk radio today, with criticism coming from both the right and left. Here’s one of the better online analysis pieces I managed to dig up this evening…
Right Assails Diversity Staging at Obama Event
Over at the Weekly Standard, Michael Goldfarb takes the Obama campaign to task for deploying the “diversity police” during an appearance by Michelle Obama today at Carnegie Mellon University. But while the campaign staff’s efforts to produce a multi-racial backdrop [...]

But, few answers. This is quite a fascinating situation, one that truly deserves more exposure. It’s not one that can be simply swept away by the Bush Administration. Not, at least, as long as somebody stays on it.
Mukasey’s mysterious call gets murkier
Two weeks ago, Attorney General Michael Mukasey was talking up the Bush administration’s surveillance efforts, and raised a few eyebrows when he got choked up while discussing 9/11 and telecom immunity. The real controversy, though, stems from the comments Mukasey made right before he got emotional. Officials “shouldn’t need a warrant when somebody with a phone in [...]

I’m pleased to pass along tonight’s best post on global warming. You know that it’s one of the topics we do our best to track. With that in mind, help yourself to some good news. Kinda good news.
Global Warming is Good For Something!
Well, it turns out that global warming and climate change are good for something, after all! They promote life! Okay, so it’s a toxic form of bacteria, but toxic forms of bacteria need love, too! According to report in Science Magazine, by [...]

Democrat: Iraq Makes US More Vulnerable
The Bush administration’s Iraq policy has left the United States with insufficient resources to protect itself from attack, the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee said Wednesday. “When looking at the needs in Afghanistan, the effort in Iraq _ however important _ is putting at risk our ability to [...]

I have a real problem with American Airlines. Are employees too incompetent to do the wiring changes correctly the first time? Or did the airline fail to tell them exactly how to do it? America’s airline industry (not just American) is getting pretty close to the point where travelers will look for some other way to get around. Not that there are all that many options, but things are bad and getting worse when you fly. Not only is there the over-riding safety issue, flying just isn’t fun any more. Planes are smaller, seats are cramped (and it’s not just that I’m getting wider, thank you!) and you don’t even get a back of snack mix on most flights!
So, American inspected all the MD-80’s a couple of weeks ago. Now, they’re forced to go back through them, because they weren’t fixed right the first time. Talk about making passengers feel confident!
American Cancels 850 More Flights
American Airlines is inspecting the wiring bundles on its MD-80 aircraft to comply with federal [...]

Dramatic testimony in Senate from yet another woman who says she was raped while working for KBR in Iraq. How many more reports will we have to hear, before these cases are actually taken to trial in a courtroom?
KBR: Kan you Believe how many Rapes we cover up?
Yet another woman has come forward saying she was brutally raped in Iraq while working for the U.S. contractor Kellogg Brown Root (KBR). Dawn Leamon, who has two sons on active duty, says she was raped earlier this year by a U.S. soldier and a KBR colleague. She [...]

And it’s all because of John McCain and something he says. Over and over and over.
McCain’s century-long problem — redux
One gets the distinct impression that these guys are not familiar with the phrase, “Never let ‘em see you sweat.” Republicans are not only concerned about John McCain having said — more than once — that he’s willing to maintain a U.S. troop presence in Iraq for 100 years, they’re apparently in a near panic [...]

I’ve not been very good at keep up with the ongoing electronic voting machine problems. Honestly, in following the reports, some of the discrepancies didn’t seem big enough to warrant a full-fledged rant. However, in a couple of spots, things are getting interesting. Kudos to Bradblog for keeping his ears and eyes open.
BREAKING: Sequoia Touch-Screen Voting Machines Subpoenaed in NJ
Just out from the NJ Star-Ledger… Subpoenas were issued in six New Jersey counties today, demanding that officials turn over for testing all voting machines where discrepancies were found in the presidential primary tallies. Election officials in Bergen, Gloucester, Mercer, Middlesex, Ocean and Union counties were instructed to turn over the machines [...]

Just in case you thought things might be settling down a bit in Washington, think again. Now the Bush Administration is going after Republicans in the Senate! That’s right…Surprise!!
Bush throws GOP Senators under the bus on the bi-partisan housing bill
You know all that talk about the great bi-partisanship in the Senate about the housing bill. You know, because the housing market is a disaster, Senators decided to rise to the occasion. Guess who undermined it without telling the Republicans? Yep, George Bush. And, [...]

Another rainy/stormy stretch here in Arkansas. Not typical for this time of year and I’m getting really tired of it! Traffic was abominable on the way into work this morning; not much better coming home tonight. The really depressing thing is that it’s supposed to be WORSE tomorrow! At least the forecast for the weekend is looking better. Maybe I can get out into the mudpit that’s supposed to be a backyard and start to clean things up. At least we’ve been spared any serious damage from the recent storms. So far. Fingers crossed.
And, articles like the following don’t serve to help the depression, when they only support what I’ve already been noticing:
The Inflation Chronicles
…From readers, the consequences: “Fun size” candy at newsstands in midtown NYC: last week — $0.25/each, yesterday — $0.50 each. Here at work the vending machines now stock reduced-size Snickers and peanut M&Ms at the same price ($1.00) formerly charged for the larger sizes. If you think the copper thieves in Las Vegas are bad, you should see what [...]
Hey, if that’s not depressing enough for you, check this out:
Financial Armageddon
Fill me in please with your input and tell me where you’re from after you read the below: This post, Uglier Than You Thought, over at FinancialArmageddon.com makes it seem like the end is near, but I contend that it is regional although there seems to be somewhat of a slowdown here in the NY metropolitan area, but nothing disastrous… at least not yet. Real estate prices are still enormously [...]
Heck, go for the trifecta:
Glum
In the WaPo today, “Most Americans Glum on Financial Progress”: “Offering the gloomiest assessment of personal economic progress in close to half a century, a new survey has found that most Americans think they have not made economic progress over the past five years, as their incomes have stagnated and they have increasingly borrowed money [...]
