Greenhouse Gases

April 16, 2008 · No Comments

You know, global warming. Climate change.  The big issues that have been ignored far too long around here. Well…as promised…

Bush announces greenhouse gas strategy. Surprise It’s bad.

President Bush delivered a speech today in which he outlined a new strategy to “effectively combat climate change.” Unfortunately, on my initial read of excerpts from his speech, it seems deeply, deeply flawed. Bush is finally publicly admitting that emissions should be curb [...]

Earth To Bush: We Can’t Wait 15 More Years

President Bush just delivered his Rose Garden global warming speech: If we fully implement our strong new laws, adhere to the principles I’ve outlined, and adopt appropriate incentives, we will put America on an ambitious new track for greenhouse gas reductions. The growth in emissions will slow over the next decade, stop by 2025, and begin [...]

It’s All About His Age

April 16, 2008 · No Comments

Suddenly, John McCain’s age has become an issue.  A pretty big issue, thanks to John Murtha, no spring chicken himself!

Murtha tackles McCain’s age

As regular readers know, I’ve been fascinated with the implications of John McCain’s age on the presidential campaign. For all the talk about Americans’ comfort levels when it comes to an African-American president or woman president, there’s ample evidence that voters are even more concerned with a septuagenarian president. Howard Dean recently noted that the DNC [...]

The Death Penalty

April 16, 2008 · No Comments

The Supreme Court had something to say about lethal injection today. The question is - what impact will the ruling have beyond the target state, Kentucky?

Supreme Court Affirms Kentucky’s Lethal Injection Protocol

The good news is that every member of the Supreme Court agrees that disemboweling, beheading, drawing and quartering, dissecting, and burning alive all violate the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment. The bad news is that seven justices in a maze of opinions (the lead opinion, written by Chief Justice Roberts, is joined only by Justices Kennedy and Alito) agree that [...]

Don’t Look Over Here

You might notice that we have a problem in Afghanistan. A growing problem.

Busy in Iraq, US Faces Surging Violence in Afghanistan

Jonathan S. Landay reports for McClatchy Newspapers, “While America’s attention remains focused on Iraq, violence is escalating in Afghanistan, worrying senior US defense officials and commanders who’re struggling to find some 7,000 more American and European troops to combat resurgent Taliban and [...]

Ugly Turn

April 16, 2008 · 1 Comment

This, I don’t believe, would work out well for the Clinton Campaign.  At the very least, it would help push the entire campaign into a notoriously ugly mode. I’m not sure the American voters would welcome six or seven months of that stress.

Clinton pollster urges her to ‘completely abandon her positive campaign’

Reasonable Democrats can disagree about the merit of Hillary Clinton’s negative campaigning over the last few months. Clinton supporters argue that the attacks against Barack Obama have been fair and accurate, and if he can’t overcome the harsh criticism now, he’ll wither against the GOP in the fall. Obama supporters argue, of course, that the [...]

Housing Numbers

Grim, indeed.

1 in 33 Homeowners Projected to Be in Foreclosure Within the Next Two Years

One in 33 homeowners is projected to be in foreclosure primarily over the next two years, as a result of subprime loans made in 2005 and 2006, according to a new report released today by The Pew Charitable Trusts [...]

100 Days

More specifics from the Clinton campaign.  Will this reassure some hesitant voters?

Hillary Outlines Agenda for First 100 Days

Speaking at a meeting of the Newspaper Association of America in Pennsylvania today, Hillary Clinton outlined the agenda, if elected, for her first 100 days in office: “Clinton’s prospective 100-day agenda included the start of a troop withdrawal from Iraq and  [...]

Amazing

McCain admits the economy is not his strong suit, and Americans STILL see him as better to handle the economy. Really?

McCain-onomics

A new Reuters/Zogby poll out this morning, with this finding: McCain was seen as a better steward of the economy than either Democrat despite their repeated criticism of his economic credentials. He led Obama by 3 points and Clinton by [...]

Daily Economic Update

April 16, 2008 · No Comments

Hey, clothing costs less!  That’s the good news.  Everything else is quite bleak.

Sticker Shock: Bread Prices Up 14.7 Percent, Milk Prices Up 13.3 Percent

Consumer prices pushed higher last month as increases in energy, food and airline tickets overwhelmed the biggest drop in clothing prices in nearly a decade. The Labor Department reported Wednesday that consumer prices rose 0.3 percent in March after being unchanged in February. Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, posted a [...]

Just downright frightening:
Middle Class Squeeze

Some pretty intense statistics I picked up from a speech I heard this weekend from Harvard professor Elizabeth Warren: Decline in annual median family income from 2001 to 2007: $1,146. Average yearly increase in inflation adjusted dollars over the same period of time for annual spending on the following items: [...]

Halfway

I’m pretty much back on my feet, after fighting another strange bug for a couple of days. It was so non-specific, I couldn’t even figure out what (if anything) to take to treat it. At least the weather today helped - clear, blue, skies and warmer temperatures.  That’s more like it!

I just about overdosed on politics while I was stuck at the house. Seriously - when you watch the cable newsers pretty much non-stop, it’s almost overwhelming.  But, again today, that’s what most of the bloggers were dealing with. Politics.  One of the hottest topics - is Hillary’s campaign in trouble?

Wash Post/ABC News Poll: Clinton “has lost trust among voters, a majority of whom now view her as dishonest”

I won’t make any comment on this finding from the latest Washington Post/ABC News poll because the thing speaks for itself — and it should be speaking to superdelegates: “Lost in the Hillary Rodham Clinton campaign’s aggressive attacks on Barack Obama in recent days is a deep and enduring problem that threatens to undercut any [...]
