Saturday Night Economic Lesson

One more. For the road. What an excellent summary of where our economy is these days.

Has The Great American Shopping Spree Finally Ended?

Transfixed by turmoil in the financial markets, we may be missing the year’s biggest economic story: the end of the Great American Shopping Spree. For the past quarter century, Americans have gone on an unprecedented consumption binge–for [...]

Exhaustion

April 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Whew.  Long day, but a good one!  Farmers’ Market this morning and we DID get fresh Arkansas strawberries! Lunch with daughter and her fiance’ and then a five mile walk on the RIverWalk with our dogs and daughter’s. A couple of hours to relax at the house, then a carnival at the wife’s school tonight, helping man the Cake Game.

Finally home, chilling, and found a couple of interesting posts.

Keith Olbermann Gives Stephanopoulos Some Questions To Ask Of McCain

Since ABC’s George Stephanopoulos is so willing to take directions from hosts on rival networks, Keith Olbermann offers some helpful hints for questions to ask Republican presidential candidate John McCain when he appears on This Week this Sunday. After all, these are questions the public deserves to have [...]

Next Week Should Be Interesting

Oh, just try to not be upset.

Oil hits new high, Dow burst with excitement

A warm welcome to yet another record high with oil prices. I’d say it’s safe to say that the $115 support level has been thoroughly tested and it folded faster than Iraqi troops in Basra. Oil closed at $116.79, with $120 looking like an easy target. See what happens when you let industry choose [...]

Avalanches Smack Alaska

April 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Global Warming, again?  Whatever the cause, the result is horrible!

US: Avalanches knock out power to Alaska’s capital

Massive avalanches destroyed transmission lines and support towers to a dam that supplies 85 percent of the electricity for Alaska’s capital, and utility rates could quintuple for months until repairs are made, officials said. The series of avalanches hit at 4 a.m. Wednesday, taking out 1.5 miles of power transmission line and destroying or severely damaging [...]

It’s Almost Time

The gap is widening. Unless there’s something HUGE in the next few days, Pennsylvania really could decide the race.

Clinton Running Out of Time

The Associated Press says “time is running out” on Sen. Hillary Clinton’s presidential aspirations, “the long-ago front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination who now trails Barack Obama in delegates, states won and popular votes.” “Compounding Clinton’s woes, [...]

The Devaluation of Your Home

April 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The housing industry is really in trouble and there’s nothing (that I can see) on the horizon to turn things around. Jobs are disappearing, so people can’t afford their mortgage payments (or can’t afford to try to GET one) and they can’t afford to sell their house because it’s not worth as much as they owe on the mortgage.  What’s wrong with this picture?

Poll: Homeowners see home values falling.

According to a new Reuters/University of Michigan survey, 41 percent of homeowners report “that their home had lost value during the past year, compared with 36 percent the prior month, the highest level since the late 1980s when the question was first asked. A year ago, only 20 percent said their homes had lost value.” [...]

Saturday Morning Coffee

April 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Just getting things started around here and I’m actually looking forward to the weekend.  The weather is shaping up to be marvelous, we both have two days off and plan on getting lots of things done that have been back-burnered for some time.  So, I may be spending more time on that and a bit less time hunkered down in front of the laptop.  A couple of walks with the dogs are on tap, too! And, of course, a trip to the Farmers’ Market is the first thing on the agenda this morning. Fresh, local, strawberries have been promised!

We’re going to play politics this morning, with Chris Bowers attempting to explain what’s going to happen with those Michigan and Florida delegates.  See if you agree with his predictions.

Explaining Michigan and Florida

In my previous post today, I argued that Michigan would be seated at the convention with a pledged delegate breakdown of Clinton 73 and Obama 55, while Florida will be seated at the convention with a pledged delegate breakdown of Clinton 105, Obama 67, and Edwards 13. Since this argument was met with virtually universal horror in the comments, I thought I [...]
