Your Child’s Edukashun

May 1, 2008 · 2 Comments

Guess what?  The big national education plan just ain’t workin’.

Is Our Children Learning?

From the Associated Press today: “The $6 billion reading program at the center of President Bush’s signature education law has failed to make a difference in how well children understand what they read, according to a study by the program’s own champion — the U.S. Department of Education. The program, Reading First, was designed to help boost student performance in low-income elementary schools, but [...]

I’m sure the Iraqi people are heaping praise on the United States for this.

In Iraq 70 Percent of People Lack Clean Water

The number of civilians in Iraq without water has risen from 50 percent to 70 percent during 2003 to 2007 [...]

Not Surprised

Well, this certainly doesn’t surprise me. More foot-dragging and more attempts at arm-twisting.

Bush administration refuses to turn over telecom documents.

Newsweek’s Michael Isikoff reports that the Bush administration is “refusing to disclose internal e-mails, letters and notes showing contacts with major telecommunications companies over how to persuade Congress” to back telecom immunity in a recent surveillance bill. Court declarations show extensive contacts between industry officials and the administration: “One court declaration, for example, confirms the existence [...]

Those Talking Heads

May 1, 2008 · No Comments

Remember the story about how the Pentagon has been using retired military officers to spread the administration’s “Talking Points” about the Iraq War? A point that slid by many reports is that such operations simply are not legal!

Yes, Dana, It’s Against The Law

Kudos to Raw Story’s Eric Brewer, for going boldly where the A-list of White House stenographers fear to tread yesterday. Eric, who has been sidelined by White House spokesperson Dana Perino on many occasions, finally got the chance [... ]

Not A Good Day

May 1, 2008 · No Comments

The McCain Camp had a couple of quite major missteps today.  Put together, they don’t paint a very pretty picture of a campaign or a candidate.

McCain Idiocy Watch

It’s hard to keep up. Two examples so far this morning. First, we get a lesson in civil engineering:Republican John McCain said Wednesday that the bridge collapse in Minnesota that killed 13 people last year would not have [...]

Making Things Up

There’s no better explanation for where Hagee comes up with these outlandish allegations!

Hagee: Abortions Easier To Get In Public School Than Aspirin (Video)

In a sermon given at his San Antonio, Texas Cornerstone megachurch that was telecast and available in up to ninety million homes worldwide, controversial pastor John Hagee, who has endorsed the presidential bid of Arizona Republican Senator John McCain, Jr., claimed that American public schools provide abortion services. Hagee stated, [...]

Maybe he should worry about this.  At least IT’S true!

Contaminated Drug

This is a really tragic twist to an already disastrous situation.

Drug Contamination that Killed 81 May Have Been Deliberate, F.D.A. Says

Federal drug regulators believe that a contaminant detected in a crucial blood thinner that has caused 81 deaths was added deliberately, something the Food and Drug Administration has only hinted at previously [...]

Ads For Your Candidate

May 1, 2008 · No Comments

This is a fascinating new service, but very limited in scope right now.

Democratizing TV

This is an amazing new service. Anyone (yes, even you) can run a political ad on TV, for as little as $25!! Free-speech muzzlers, like John McCain, must really, really hate this: Average Americans, running whatever ads they want, criticizing their elected representatives on TV. I wonder how long it’ll be [...]

Tenacity

This is why Hillary Clinton has refused to drop out.  She’s been waiting for the tide to turn…

Poll: Clinton Beats McCain In Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio

Winning among white working class voters, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton holds strong leads over Arizona Sen. John McCain - and runs much better than Illinois Sen. Barack Obama - in three critical swing states, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania, according to three [...]

Gallup confirms the Obama slide

What seems most noticeable about the polling is that Obama didn’t start tanking until after he ‘denounced’ Wright. Why is that? [...]

And, from the “one step forward, two steps back” department - this little embarrassment:

“Hillary vs. the Coffee Maker” is #1 on YouTube, top of Drudge, over 300,000 views in 18 hours

Yesterday, we got a tip from fellow blogger Paddy, who writes at Cliff Schecter’s blog, that he just watched MSNBC and saw Hillary, during her now infamous gas station photo op, was caught on camera trying to make herself a cup of coffee (cappuccino, we heard), and failing miserably. We alerted a ton of friends, and one was able to find [...]

The Definition Is…

May 1, 2008 · No Comments

It seems America is fighting over the technical definition of “recession”. As we noted earlier, a preliminary report of a tiny growth in the GDP technically means we’re not in a recession, there’s a darn good reason to say “forget the technicalities.

Redefining Recession

Paul Krugman makes a very pertinent point today in his blog: the technical definition of recession doesn’t really matter to Americans. What really matters is not how the economy is labeled, but whether or not Americans can fill their cars with gas, put food on the table, buy clothes for their kids, pay their [...]

Michigan and Florida

May 1, 2008 · No Comments

I think it’s becoming quite obvious that the delegates from Michigan and Florida WILL be seated at the Democratic Convention, no matter what the agreements were.  That’s probably not fair to the Obama campaign, which played by the rules in Michigan and stayed off the ballot.  But, it’s probably the best thing for the voters.  Now, how to divide up the delegates?

Kucinich Floats Plan to Resolve Florida, Michigan Delegate Disputes

Former Democratic presidential candidate Dennis J. Kucinich has proposed a plan to seat delegations from Florida and Michigan at the Democratic National Convention based on the results of a fresh round of polling in the two states [...]

Remember This Day

May 1, 2008 · No Comments

Because you’ll probably never get me to say this again: Bill O’Reilly did a pretty good interview.  Yup.  I was surprised at how he handled the first half of his interview with Hillary Clinton.  If he stays on track in the second half (airing shortly), I’ll be amazed.

Hillary Clinton And Bill O’Reilly Square Off On The Factor: Watch Video

Hillary Clinton made her first ever appearance on the O’Reilly Factor on Wednesday, a confrontational but mostly friendly exchange that was — kudos to Bill — the most issue-oriented (if right-leaning) major interview with a presidential candidate in recent memory. One of the more heated policy discussions came over taxes. O’Reilly demanded to know [...]

They Really Don’t Like Him

May 1, 2008 · No Comments

Wow.

The most unpopular president in modern history.

A new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation finds that 71 percent of the American public disapproves of the job President Bush is doing: “No president has ever had a higher disapproval rating in any CNN or Gallup poll; in fact, this is the first time that any president’s disapproval rating has cracked the 70 percent mark,” said [...]

Almost To Friday

May 1, 2008 · No Comments

Whew.  We’ve almost made it through another one.  Another week. America’s economic woes continue to pile up as gas prices and food prices show no signs of pulling back, while housing values drop and foreclosures mount. Still, we managed to squeeze out a tiny, tiny increase in the GDP, so we’re not technically in a recession. Nice, huh?

Oh, almost forgot, it’s anniversary time!

5 Years after Mission Accomplished; April US Troop Toll 50 Killed; 1,073 Iraqis Killed this Month

5 Years after George W. Bush’s infamous speech aboard the USS Lincoln, the mission seems incomplete. Bush imagined that he could get rid of Saddam Hussein and install exiled businessman and bank fraudster Ahmad Chalabi in his place. Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz told Congress that the US would be out of Iraq, except for a division (20,000 men or so), by October of 2003. Wolfowitz and other Bush officials depicted Iraqis as [...]

Flashback: Read McCain’s ‘Mission Accomplished’ Iraq Speech

Today is the fifth anniversary of President Bush’s infamous “Mission Accomplished” speech. What many don’t know is that just three weeks later, on May 22, 2003, Sen. John McCain offered a mission accomplished speech of his own. On the Senate floor, McCain proclaimed “massive victory” in Iraq and [...]
