Pure Irony

The U.S. is chastising Myanmar for its response to the recent cyclone. Hmmm. We responded HOW to Katrina?

U.S. “outraged” by Myanmar’s response to cyclone

The United Nations estimates 1.5 million people have been “severely affected” by the cyclone that swept through Myanmar and the United States expressed outrage on Thursday at the delays in allowing in aid. “We’re outraged by the slowness of the response of the government of Burma (Myanmar) to welcome and accept assistance,” U.S. Ambassador to [...]

And, that’s exactly what DNC Chair, Howard Dean, did after this revelation from Cindy McCain.

Cindy McCain: I Won’t Ever Release My Tax Returns

Cindy McCain, wife of the presumptive GOP nom, told Today’s Ann Curry this a.m. that she will never release her tax returns — not even if her husband wins the highest office in the land. She said it’s a privacy issue and that she has always filed separately from her husband. Cindy McCain is heiress to the Hensley liquor fortune. “I am [...]

Ticket Prices

May 8, 2008 · No Comments

Airlines raised ticket prices again Thursday. Certainly not surprising, given what’s happening to fuel costs.  The truly amazing thing is that the fuel surcharges may now comprise a bigger part of your ticket cost than the actual fare!  All this is not going to fix itself.

Major US Airlines Raise Their Prices

The three biggest U.S. carriers said Thursday they have again raised ticket prices, this time by $20 roundtrip, to recoup rapidly rising fuel costs. The increases by American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines affect the carriers’ fuel surcharges, which now total $130 roundtrip on many flights. That means passengers on some cheap flights could be [...]

Words Have Meaning

The Bush Administration’s realization that terminology can be troubling took a long time to happen.  Not everybody is happy.

Santorum rails against Bush admin’s ‘politically correct version of the truth’

Two weeks ago, several Bush administration agencies, including the State Department, the Department of Homeland Security and the National Counter Terrorism Center, released guidelines on how U.S. officials should talk about terrorism. It’s a mistake to describe Islamic extremists as “jihadists” or “mujahedeen,” the guidelines said, just as it’s wrong to condemn “Islamo-fascism.” As the [...]

Disenfranchising Indianan Nuns Gives Oklahoma GOP Ideas

Isn’t that just like the GOP?  Others hear about not letting 80 and 90 year old nuns vote and they shake their heads and say, “that’s awful.”  But the GOP–in this case the Oklahoma State Senate GOP majority–see it as opportunity. Hurting Hillary

May 8, 2008 · No Comments

I’ve never thought much of Mark Penn and questioned why Hillary depended on him so much.  Looks like I was more right, than wrong.

What a Pennhead

Time recounts the top 5 mistakes made by Hillary’s campaign. This one jumps out: “Clinton picked people for her team primarily for their loyalty to her, instead of their mastery of the game. That became abundantly clear in a strategy [...]

Hagee Is Going To Be A Problem

May 8, 2008 · No Comments

No doubt about it.  McCain’s not going to have an easy time distancing himself from the preacher.  You can’t solicit a man’s support one day, then turn around and call what he says the next day “nonsense”.  At the very least, it makes it look like nobody vetted Hagee.  Nobody,  at all.

Hagee Reneges On Retraction Of His Katrina Comments: ‘God Always Punishes Unconfessed Sin’

Two weeks ago, controversial Pastor John Hagee reiterated his prior belief that Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans because it was “planning a sinful” “homosexual rally.” Asked about the comments, McCain — who sought Hagee’s endorsement for more than a year — was forced to distance himself, calling them “nonsense” nine times. After McCain was put on [...]

Then, there’s Rod Parsley, another prominent preacher:

McCain’s other pastor problem: Rod Parsley.

Mother Jones reports that conservative televangelist Rod Parsley has delivered hate-filled sermons calling Islam “the greatest religious enemy of our civilization and the world.” The historic mission of America was to see “this false religion destroyed,” he added. At a public event in March, John McCain embraced Parsley’s endorsement of him and hailed the preacher [...]

Covering The Candidates

May 8, 2008 · No Comments

Folks, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: You have to do your own digging into the background of political candidates.  Don’t trust every picture painted by the nightly news or cable networks. Take the coverage of John McCain as an example:

‘Maverick’ McCain? Not when it counts

The Arizona Republic thought it might be a good idea to scrutinize John McCain’s voting record a bit, and consider whether his media-driven “maverick” reputation holds up. Take a wild guess what they found. “Over the years, Sen. John McCain has publicly condemned Republican Party leaders and occasionally voted against the GOP on selected issues. But [...]

Pretty one-sided, but well-vetted:

John McCain’s Top 10 Out-of-Touch Moments

In another sign of the media’s sheepish acceptance of the Barack Obama “elitist” story line, the New York Times on Tuesday described the Illinois Senator as “tagged as elitist.” But just as disturbing as the Republicans’ apparent success in establishing the “out of touch” narrative as a fixture in campaign coverage is John McCain’s seeming [...]

Thursday Already

May 8, 2008 · No Comments

It has been one of those busy weeks, with not much chance to catch our collective breath around here! The weekend is closing in, and that’s a good thing. By the way, just a reminder, Sunday is Mother’s Day.

We’re kicking things off tonight with something a bit different.  If you’re a regular around here, you know I do read through blogs from both sides of the political aisle and pass along writings from both sides.  Admittedly, most of what I’ve been linking to recently has come from writers on the left.  Every once in a while, I spot something from the other side of the aisle that “clicks” with me and deserves to be passed along.

My Female Pride in Hillary Is Emerging
