The Bush Administration vs NBC

May 20, 2008 · 1 Comment

We posted about this earlier, but the analysis is beginning to roll in. Here are a couple of the best. NBC really was NOT as out of line as I feared.

The White House vs. NBC News: Another reaction…

Eat The Press’ Rachel Sklar thinks Ed Gillespie doesn’t have a leg to stand on… Ed Gillespie is mad as hell and he’s not gonna take it anymore! Evidently he’s been storing up all sorts of affronts against the Bush administration committed by NBC News, like when you finally explode at your roommate for forgetting the [...]

The White House vs. NBC News: Yet Another Reaction…

The Washington Post’s Dan Froomkin writes about the Gillespie letter and makes an interesting argument which I have edited for brevity… It doesn’t take a trained psychologist to observe that Bush got angrier and angrier as the Engel interview went on. That obviously had nothing to do with the editing; it had to do with Engel’s [...]

Olbermann Responds To White House NBC Complaints:

Monday night on “Countdown,” Keith Olbermann responded to the White
House allegations that NBC engaged in “deceitful editing” in airing
excerpts of Richard Engel’s interview with President Bush. Olbermann
aired the full excerpt and blasted the White House saying, “The White
House apparently [doesn't realize] that in full, it is clear the
President never actually answered Richard Engel’s first question and
clear that the President either does not know what he talked about or [...]

It’s so very sad. If you’re young, and haven’t seen it, follow the link. If you’re older (like me) it’s a great chance to remember a wonderful moment.

Govt. May Have Massive Surveillance Program For Use In ‘National Emergency,’ 8 Million ‘Potential Suspects’

Last year, former deputy attorney general James Comey revealed that in 2004, he refused to “certify” the legality of certain aspects of the National Security Agency (NSA) spy program. Comey witnessed Alberto Gonzales and Andrew Card try to force a bed-ridden John Ashcroft to approve the program. Comey, however, did not publicly give specifics [...]

DOJ torture report points to widespread abuse.

The Department of Justice just released its report on the FBI’s involvement in abusive interrogations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and at Guantanamo Bay, between 2001 and 2004. The report finds that the “Bush administration’s National Security Council ignored concerns raised by the FBI over the abusive treatment of terrorism suspects.” The 370-page report details FBI agents’ [...]

Remember That “Real ID” Plan?

May 20, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Did you realize the deadline to implement it had passed? This is a powerful example of how states can stand up to the Federal Government. And, today, they got some justification.

Real ID, Great for Spying on Americans, Not So Great for Protecting Us from Terrorist Attack

May 11, 2008 was the deadline for implementation of the Real ID Act. So far, not one state is in compliance and some states are openly defiant. The Real ID Act would turn our state issued driver’s licenses into de facto national identity cards. EPIC, the Electronic Privacy Information Center, has issued an analysis of the Department of Homeland Security’s national ID program. Let me tell you, it ain’t a rave review [...]

Mail-In Elections

May 20, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Honestly, I was starting to think that the “mail in your ballot” idea was a pretty good one. At least, it seemed, there would be a piece of paper that recorded your vote. Well, Brad Friedman changed my mind about that:

Why ‘Vote-by-Mail’ Elections are a Terrible Idea for Democracy

Some 33,500 registered voters in Oregon received two ballots in the
mail for this year’s primary election in the country’s only 100%
Vote-by-Mail (VBM) state. Though Secretary of State Bill Bradbury says
he’s confident the problem will be handled, and that no voter will get
to cast two ballots, that [...]

Methinks the candidate is confused.

McCain’s confusion over Iran gets a little more embarrassing

Because Barack Obama has indicated he’d consider diplomacy with Iran as
president, Republicans and other far-right voices have highlighted the
bizarre inanities of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. This is the guy, the GOP
argues, that Obama would be willing to chat with. But there’s actually some ambiguity to the point. In Iran’s system, Ahmadinejad may be president, but [...]
