Americans worry about funding a long retirement
Americans worry that inflation and the rising cost of health care are increasing the risk that they will run out of money in retirement, according to a study released Monday. The survey by the Society of Actuaries found that people already retired were most worried about inflation and affording long-term care. Pre-retirees, meanwhile, ranked affordable health care as their top concern, followed by [...]

He’ll deny it, but John McCain is developing a bit of a problem with Veterans. He has an impressive service record, that’s true. His voting record may be problematic for some…
McCain shouldn’t count too hard on veterans’ support
In light of the vote yesterday on a modernized, bipartisan GI Bill for U.S. troops, John McCain was forced to defend his position against general educational benefits for veterans. (For the record, McCain didn’t vote on the bill, preferring to go to a fundraiser in California.) McCain responded by changing the subject away from the bill, [...]

Oil Oracle Sees $200 Crude
Mr. Arjun N. Murti is an oil market analyst with Goldman Sachs. And Mr. Arjun N. Murti is now predicting $200 a barrel crude and as much as $6.00 per gallon gas for US consumers. From the NYT: “A few years ago, rivals scoffed when he predicted oil would breach $100 a barrel. Few are laughing now. Oil shattered [...]

Texas wants to keep the polygamy kids in custody.
Texas Appeals Polygamist Sect Ruling
Texas child welfare authorities are appealing a ruling in the polygamist sect case, arguing that the state was right to put more than 440 children in foster care. The state is also asking the Texas Supreme Court to allow it to keep custody of the children until [...]

McCain reverses course on immigration reform (again), drawing far-right rebuke
When John McCain’s presidential campaign faltered badly last summer, there were a variety of problems, but near the top of the list was McCain’s work on a comprehensive immigration reform measure, which most Republican activists hated with a vengeance. McCain ultimately decided to abandon his own legislation, and announced earlier this year that he wouldn’t [...]

Clinton And Obama Camps: CNN Report Of “Talks” Between Campaigns Is 100% False
CNN reported this morning that there are some kind of “talks” taking place between the Obama and Clinton campaigns about the possibility that she might leave the race and become veep. The network claimed that the Clinton camp was pushing [...]

I’m guessing that John McCain forgot about this interview…
In 2000, McCain joked that he’d be too old to run for president in 2008.
On Aug. 1, 2000, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) appeared on PBS’s Newshour with Jim Lehrer. When asked about the possibility that he might run for president in 2008, McCain said that he would probably be too old: LEHRER: Finally for the record, you have not lost your desire to be President of the United States [...]

U.S. Home Resales Drop, Inventories Rise to Record as Housing Woes Persist
Sales of previously owned homes in the U.S. fell in April and the supply of unsold properties reached a record, signaling no let-up in the housing slump. Purchases declined 1 percent to an annual rate of 4.89 million, higher than forecast, the [...]

Oh, my. Hillary’s done it again. Put her foot in her mouth. Links the Bobby Kennedy assassination with her determination to stay in the campaign. Huh, you say?? Yup, I reply. Just click the link. You’ll get the video clips to prove it.
And from “The Moderate Voice” comes an excellent compilation of comments:
Democratic Senator Hillary Clinton has apologized after today perhaps inadvertently jumping the whale — more than jumping the shark — when she invoked the 1968 RFK assassination as a reason to stay in the race, and then apologized after it began triggering a mini-firestorm of protest and negative media coverage. The largely unmentionable issue in American politics is this: [...]
Meanwhile, Jeralyn at Talk Left says everybody is over-reacting. I’m probably in her court. I don’t have the energy on a holiday weekend to really get upset..
…The leap that is required to think that her reference to the RFK assassination was in any way a statement or subliminal wish that it might happen to Obama is mind-boggling [...]

McCain Finally Rejects Rod Parsley Endorsement
How’s the underside of that bus looking, Rod? ABC: “Sen. John McCain rejected the endorsement of a second controversial pastor Thursday, saying there is no place for the Rev. Rod Parsley’s comments about Islam. “I believe there is no place for that kind of dialogue in America, and I believe that even though he [...]

McCain targets Obama on military service
There’s been a casual agreement in recent campaign cycles that presidential candidates with military backgrounds tout their service, but they don’t necessarily denigrate their rivals for not wearing a uniform. In each of the last five races, one presidential hopeful had considerably more military experience than his rival, and in each instance, the one who [...]

Why? Oh, why?
This isn’t even a surprise anymore
What does still surprise me is there are still people who think we shouldn’t spend money on universal health care, education, or food for poor families, but don’t seem to care about this: “A Pentagon audit of $8.2 billion in American taxpayer money spent by the United States Army on contractors in Iraq has found that almost none of the payments followed [...]

And it’s been one heck of a long week. I’m gonna line up some posts for tonight, then crash. Saturday morning means the farmers’ market and I’m ready to snag some healthy food.
Lots of chatter today about John McCain’s medical records. Bloggers on the Left were all up in arms about the weird three-hour window reporters got to dig through all the records. It is pretty strange, I have to admit.
What is McCain hiding in his medical records?
Joe reported yesterday on McCain’s rather bizarre contortion regarding “release” of his medical records. He’s not “releasing” them at all. Like some kind of supermarket game show where you get 5 minutes to stuff as many groceries in your basket before the time runs out, McCain is giving a select group of reporters only 3 hours to peruse through what are [...]
So, what did reporters come up with when they got their hands on the records? The AP’s report (via CNN) is pretty cut and dried –
McCain’s in pretty good shape.
Three-time melanoma survivor John McCain appears cancer-free, has a strong heart and is in generally good health, according to eight years of medical records reviewed by The Associated Press.
The Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting remains at risk for [...]
